Judy A. Nicholson
1935-2017
Nicholson, Judith Anne
The family of Judy Nicholson wishes to announce her peaceful passing
in the presence of her husband, Fred ,and 3 children at the Charlotte
County Hospital on Wednesday, August 9. she was born in Halifax
,N.S.,the daughter of the late Seldon and Margaret (Chisholm) Bryson.
She attended QEH High School,Halifax ,graduated from The University of
Kings College receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree and was employed in
advertising with Woods department store, also in Halifax. Judy was an
exceptional athlete. She played high school and university basketball
and was a Nova Scotia and New Brunswick doubles tennis champion. She
also was a successful curler and particularly enjoyed social and
competitive mixed curling with her husband. Judy was a member of the
choir of St Pauls Anglican Church for several years and it was there
that she married Fred in 1957. The couple moved to St. Stephen, after
Fred’s graduation from law school in 1959, and found it an ideal town
in which to live and raise their family. Judy became involved in her
new community and over the years volunteered her time and talents to
many organizations and groups. She was the regional coordinator for
Laubach Literacy and also spent many hours tutoring adults in the same
program. While a member of the St. Stephen School Board she was a
passionate advocate for French Immersion, not always a popular
position. For most of her time in the Charlotte County town she was a
member of the Atlantic Charter Chapter of the IODE, serving a term as
Regent. During the Canadian Flag debate in her chapter she exhibited
her strong will and independence of thought in her support for our new
flag. Judy was a leader in the group that supported the Chilean
Hurtado refugee family that lived for over a year in the Christ Church
Anglican basement in St. Stephen to escape deportation. The family
eventually was granted citizenship and settled in Canada. She was a
dedicated worker for the Charlotte County Museum and served as a
director until recently. Judy was an avid Gardner and thoroughly
enjoyed her time at the family cottage at Hills Point, particularly
with her children and grandchildren who she adored. She was less
enthusiastic about her adventures on the water in Fred’ s sailboat and
other water craft.
Above all else Judy was a dedicated and loving wife and mother and her
family gave enduring love, respect and understanding in return.
Surviving in addition to her husband Fred, of 60 years; are their
children; daughter Heather Nicholson and her husband Jeff MacNutt of
Charlottetown, PEI; two sons Bruce Nicholson and his wife Lisa of
Biddeford, ME, U.S.A, and Scott and his wife Joanna of St. Stephen,
NB, 7 grandchildren Matthew Nicholson, Ryan Nicholson, Emily
Nicholson, Charlotte Nicholson, Allister Nicholson, Lily MacNutt and
Frankie MacNutt, cousins, nieces and nephews. Judy was the last

Bryson.
