Obituary for Joseph Arthur (Art) Richard
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our father, Joseph Arthur Richard (Art), on Sunday, September 3rd in his 90th year, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s and Esophageal cancer. He passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his children and his beloved companion of 12 years, Beverley Kieran.
Art was born (November 29th, 1927) and raised on the Miramichi in New Brunswick. He grew up in Nordin, in a close-knit Acadian family of ten children, and finally settled down in Newcastle to raise his family of five with the love of his life, Margaret (Taylor) [pre-deceased]. More than anything else, Art loved his family. He cherished his parents, brothers and sisters, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his wife and companion. His second passion was sports. Through his entire life he was constantly playing badminton, golf, basketball and most of all tennis. He stayed active until his mid-eighties. His third passion was his work. He was so proud to have served in the military for 25 years and 25 years in the public service. In his final years, Art moved to Ottawa to be close to his children. In this new life, he met a wonderful circle of friends and companions, but his home and heart was always on the Miramichi. He will be missed by his immediate family and friends in Ontario/Quebec and by all of his family and friends on the Miramichi.
He is survived by his five children (Carol Vandenbelt, Stephen Richard, Nancy Richard-Perron, Patricia Robertson, Sandra Richard,), grandchildren (Sara Khangura, Ben Vandenbelt, Amber Spring, Taylor and Danielle Richard-Perron, Christopher, Sydney and Paige Robertson, Noel and Nina Campfens) and great-grandchildren (Sammy, Susanna and Sophia Khangura, Eric and Kai Vandenbelt). Art is also survived by his sister Rosie Leblanc and Ray Richard.
Special mention to the palliative care team, Dr. Louise Coulombe, and caregivers, Sonia and Tola, for their support and compassion during the difficult times near the end.
A celebration of Art’s Life will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry 315 McLeod St. ( at O’Connor) where family and friends may call from 10:00 am till time of Service in the Chapel at 11:00 am on Thursday September 7, 2017 with at reception to follow. For those wishing donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
