Jose Chaves Puim
1932-2017
PUIM, Jose Chaves.
Passed away at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, December 13,
2017, at the age of 85. Beloved husband of Guilhermina (nee Almeida).
Dear father of Carlos (Ellen), Nina (Brian), Kevin and the late
Terezinha,. Avô of Joseph, Kiera and Teresa, Lily, Vivi and
Bella. Survived by his siblings Arsenio (Leanore), Silvina (the late
Jose), Helena (Manuel) and Ines (Rick). Predeceased by his siblings
Hector (Fatima), Humberto (the late Regina) and Ilda (the late
Antonio).
He was born on the Azorean Island of Santa Maria on Feb 27, 1932. He
left school after the 3rd grade to help support his family. He was 18
before he owned his first pair of real shoes. He arrived in Canada in
November 1963 with a few dollars in his pocket and no winter coat. His
first job was washing dishes for 90 cents/hr at Zellers. Once he had
saved up enough money for a car and apartment his wife and children
joined him. He did factory and custodial work, even picked apples, all
the while raising his four children. He would eventually enjoy a
comfortable retirement. Despite his lack of formal education, his
inquisitive mind and thirst for knowledge never waned. He learned how
to use a computer in his 70’s and could even be found perusing
Facebook. There was very little that he could not figure out.
He was a progressive thinker, an avid recycler and a master of word
search and Majong tiles.
When he learned that his disease was terminal, he said he’d
fight for as long as he could. If he got to the point where he
couldn’t fight anymore, well, he would stop. He fought a good
fight and showed us all how to live and how to die with dignity and
courage.
When a loved one dies, what they said or did is often forgotten. What
endures is how they made you feel. Jose always had a smile and story
to share. It is hard to imagine a world without him. He will be sorely
missed.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to
Jose’s niece, Cindy, who selflessly cared for Jose when they
couldn’t. We are forever grateful for her love and compassion.
Resting at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas Street N., Cambridge on
Sunday, December 17, 2017 from 1-4pm.
