John Lamont McFarlane
October 17, 1928 – April 3, 2017
John McFarlane in his 89th year passed away on Monday April 3 at home surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Eleanor (nee Jackson) for 62 happy years. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, John was the son of Donald and Violet. A graduate first from McMaster University with a BA and then from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Engineering. John had a long and successful career with Ontario Hydro. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, and the Probus Club of Cobourg and a volunteer at the hospital. John had a lifelong passion for sailing which led him to enjoy years of windsurfing while in his sixties. An avid woodworker in retirement he took much joy creating gifts for his grandchildren and charity auctions. John will be remembered always for his love of family and ice cream. He is survived by his wife Eleanor, his children Bruce (Janice), their children Erin (Mark) Alex (Jan), Beth; Don (Maggie) and their children Ellie, Becca, Tricia; Joanne (Martin) and their children Geoff (Thea), Janine and two great grandchildren, Archer and Edison and one on the way. Predeceased by his parents, sister Grace and brother Alan. He is survived by his brother Don. The family invites you to join them at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Saturday April 8 between the hours of 2-4:30 pm for a Celebration of Life. A short and informal program will commence at 2:45. Light refreshments will be served. A private family interment will be held at a later date. A special thank you to all of the healthcare workers who cared for John at home and to Dr. Caldwell for years of care. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Northumberland Hills Hospital, whose care for John was always exceptional, or the charity of your choice.
