John (Jack) Dennis Mercer
1929-2017
It is with great sadness that the family of John (Jack) Dennis Mercer
announce his passing in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL at the Central
Newfoundland Regional Health Center on Monday December 11, 2017. Born
on December 27, 1929 in Grand Falls, NL, he was the son of Jack and
Marion (Peyton) Mercer He was the oldest of their 5 children.
Dad graduated from Grand Falls Academy in 1946. He then went on to
study at Acadia University in the Faculty of Arts and Science
graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor’s of Science majoring in Chemistry.
He was also accepted to McGill University to complete studies in
applied chemistry. During his years at Acadia Dad became interested in
campus politics and became President of Acadia’s Student Union in his
last year of studies.
During his time at McGill University he met and later married his
first wife Marguerite (Marge) Bureau on September 4th, 1954. They
remained together for 46 years until her death in 2000.
Dad worked in the Pulp and Paper industry in various places in Canada
beginning with Canadian International Paper in Trois Rivieres, Quebec
from there he and Marge moved their family to Kenogami (Jonquiere),
Quebec where he worked at Price Brothers Pulp and Paper. From there he
then gained employment with St. Anne Pulp and Paper Company in
Nackawic where he worked as manager of St. Anne Chemical until his
retirement in 1992.
Dad returned to Newfoundland to marry his high school sweetheart, Joan
Budgell (Pitcher) in 2008 and they settled in Point of Bay, NL.
Dad is survived by his wife Joan (Pitcher-Budgell), his sons Brian
(Anne) Elmsdale, NS, Doug (Shirley) Nackawic, NB, Gary (Shelley)
Quispamsis, NB, Mark (Perry Marszowski) Ottawa, ON. And daughters
Karen (Paul) Boyd Lincoln, NB and Brenda Mercer, Fredericton, NB. Dad
was most proud of his 6 grandchildren Gregory (Krystal) Mercer, Andrew
(Lisa) Mercer, Jordan (Errin) Scott, Jan Mercer(Adam Keetch), John
Mercer (Leigh Wright), and Danielle Luffman (Matt). Dad was also very
proud of his 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the last
member of his immediate family, his sister Helen Hutchcraft, Grand
Falls-Windsor, NL. Dad is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Dad was preceded in death by his first wife Marge in 2000 and by his
parents Jack and Marion Mercer as well as brothers Harry and Roy,
sister Roma and her husband Joseph Parsons. As well as brothers and
sisters-in-law Kathleen and Len Ellis, Constance and Gerald Conway,
Pauline and Les Barden, Barbara Mercer, John Bureau and niece Debbie
Mercer.
Following Dad’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. A
family memorial service will take place in the summer during which
time his ashes will be laid to rest in the family grave at St. Simon
and St. Jude Cemetery, Upper Queensbury, NB.
For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Parkinson’s
Foundation.
