On Saturday, December 16, 2017, Jean-Jacques, husband, father, step-father, grand-father and brother tragically passed away in a motor vehicle accident, at the age of 71.
He is survived by his loving wife Lida Kratka-Lemay, his beloved children Shawn (Pamela), Annick (Mark) and step children Tanya (Richard) and Martin;
Jacques will forever be remembered by his devoted sisters and brothers – Andrée, Carole (Robert), Michel, Charles (Peggy), Ray (Anne),and Robert; his treasured grandchildren Cameron, Sophie, Sam, Etienne & William
He will also be remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends who were blessed to know him.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Hélène Casavant ; as well as his parents Hélène (Bélanger) and Sylvio Lemay.
Jean-Jacques was born in Ottawa, the third of a family of 7 children. He attended Carleton University, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law.
He began his career with the RCMP in 1965, at the age 19, he served in Montreal, New Brunswick, Regina and Ottawa. As Inspector he was seconded to Interpol in Paris from 1984 to 1986. In the early 90s he was the Training Officer at Depot . As Chief Superintendent he was seconded to Haiti in 1994 as part of the UN International Intervention Police Force to restore the locally elected government to power. During his last 5 years of service, he served as Deputy Commissioner of the Bermuda Police Service in 1997 and Commissioner of the Bermuda Police Service from 1998 to 2001; he has been awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for his service. After his retirement from The Force in 2002, Jacques enjoyed working as a consultant on many government projects; especially dear to his heart was his role as a facilitator/trainer for the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (PPC) training Military and Police personnel in Mali, Ghana and Sénégal.
Jacques and Lida enjoyed travelling together as well as spending time with family and friends. Jacques brought so much joy to the lives of all his family. His kindness, thoughtfulness, patience, sense of humour, joy for life and support to all who needed a listening ear. We are all blessed to have had him in our lives.
Family and friends are welcome to visit at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa, ON, on Thursday, December 28, 2017, from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 pm.
A funeral service in memory of Jean-Jacques will be held on December 29, 2017 at the Notre- Dame Basilica at 385 Sussex Dr., Ottawa, ON, at 2 pm., followed by a celebration of life and reception at Beechwood Cemetery.
Those who so desire can make memorial donations in memory of Jacques to Heart & Stroke Foundation and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
