It is with profound sadness that the family of Janet Macura announces her sudden and peaceful passing on October 24, 2017 at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre, Blairmore, AB. Janet was 91 years of age. The beloved daughter of Henry (Pa) and Bessie (Ma) Poriz, Janet was born in Prague, Czech Republic on May 15, 1926.
When Janet was 16 months old, her Pa travelled from Czecho to Canada to pursue a better life. Janet was 6 years old when she and her Ma left everything familiar, and joined Pa. In May 1932 they arrived in Frank Alberta. It was a difficult adjustment for Janet and her Ma, who did not speak English and dearly missed family and friends in Czecho.
After settling in Blairmore that winter, six year old Janet would walk from Blairmore to Frank and canvas homes to see who would like to buy her Pa’s delicious sausages. Janet couldn’t read so she took a sheet of paper door to door asking “Would you like to buy salami or wieners?”, and then have people write down their order.
One of Janet’s favourite memories was walking the railroad tracks between Blairmore and Frank as a young girl with her Pa, listening to him whistle. Pa was a talented whistler and would whistle Czech songs much to Janet’s delight.
At the end of World War II, Janet met Frederick Macura in England. Janet returned home and in 1948 Fred moved to Blairmore and they married on August 25, 1951. Janet began working as a telephone operator in Blairmore, then they moved to Calgary where she had a lengthy secretarial career at CP Rail. Janet loved to travel, including trips to Europe & Asia, and she even completed a challenging trek to the base camp of Mt Everest. She was also an avid skier and hiker in the Rockies west of Calgary. After retirement, Janet and Fred moved to their mountain cabin in Harrogate, and then back to Blairmore in the early 2000’s
Janet enjoyed her time back in Blairmore. She renewed childhood friendships and made new friends. She had happy times playing cards with the Bellecrest ladies, attending senior ladies’ birthday and Christmas parties, and going on bus day trips. Janet was fiercely independent and her greatest desire was to stay in her home, enjoying visits from friends and family, taking in the beautiful scenery outside her window, and feeding the squirrels and Stellar Jays. Until the last three months of her life, Janet remained bright and happy in her home, thanks to loving and kind home-care support. We are also grateful to Dr. Powell, the CNP hospital staff and the CNP Extended Care team for their dedicated care.
Left to celebrate Janet’s life is her beloved brother, Laddie (Dorothy) Poriz; nephew, Jim (Patti) Poriz; niece, Suzan (Patrick) Kelly; great-nephews, Jesse (Stephanie) Poriz, James (Stasia) Poriz and Brent Kelly; great-nieces, Jayne (Jeremy) Bridge and Jennifer (Darren) Heide; great-great nieces and nephews, Grace & Noah Bridge, Henigrace, Mercy, Xander and Zeke Poriz, Sophia & Jessica Poriz, and Cora and Cale Heide; as well as her dear friends whose friendships blessed Janet’s life.
Janet was predeceased by her husband, Fred, on March 9, 2015 after 64 years of marriage, and by her parents.
Those who live in our hearts shall remain forever. With respect for Janet’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. A family gathering in honour of Janet will be held at a later date. Janet was very generous and happy to give to others. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Janet may be made to the charity of your choice.
