James Watson West
1924-2017
James “Jim” Watson West, 92, of The Veterans’
Health Centre and formerly of Hopewell Hill, passed away peacefully at
the Centre with his family by his side, on March 4th,
2017.
Jim was born in Hopewell Hill on June 27th, 1924 the son of
the late Clifford C. and Mary “May” (Archibald) West. He
graduated from Riverside Consolidated School in 1941, enlisting with
the Royal Canadian Air Force and heading overseas in 1943. Serving
with the 420 Snowy Owl Squadron, and receiving the Distinguished
Flying Cross, he returned home aboard the Ile de France in
1945. From there, Jim took to sales, enjoying traveling the
4 Atlantic provinces and Ontario and the many people he met along the
way.
He was a member of the Riverview Veterans Association, and
the Albert County Historical Society. A lover of local
history and genealogy he was a generous and bountiful resource to the
families and historians in the area. Following the example of his
father Cliff, Jim repaired and restored countless headstones in the
many cemeteries of the county.
His retirement brought him back to his beloved Hopewell
Hill — his piece of heaven overlooking the majestic sweep of the
marshes below. There, as anywhere he traveled, he would meet you with
a funny story and charm with his razor wit.
He loved and was always there for his family, teaching them
many things and sharing his life-lessons generously. What he taught
and gave will never be forgotten.
He will be deeply missed by his loving and devoted wife of
seventy years, Norma (Milburn) West; daughters, JoAnne West of
Moncton, Charlotte Love (Steven) of Riverview and Shelley Garnhum
(Donald) of Hopewell Cape; sons, William West (Mary) of Lower
Coverdale and Donald West (Marcy) of Moncton; his treasured
grandchildren, Matthew, Jenny, Julie, Geoffrey, Michael, Colin, Ryan,
Brenton, Hannah, Sophie and Simon and his precious great
grandchildren; his brother, William “Bill” A. West of
Riverview. He will also be missed by his in-laws and extended family
and by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he
was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Lutes and sister-in-law Peggy
West.
The family is blessed knowing the exceptional care he
received at the Veterans’ Health Centre, and the happiness he found
there.
There will be no visitation. A Funeral Service and
Celebration of his life will be held at the Albert County Funeral Home
on Tuesday, March 7th, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Paul Steeves
officiating. Following the service the family will be meeting with
relatives and friends for further sharing of memories and for
refreshments at the funeral home. Interment will be held in the
Bayview Cemetery, Harvey, NB at a later date.
Donations to the Bayview Cemetery or to the charity of the
donor’s choice would be greatly appreciated by the
family.
Arrangements are in the care of the Albert County Funeral
Home, 4130 route 114, Hopewell Cape, NB, E4H-3K2
