Obituary of James “Jim” Dempsey
Jim Dempsey of the former Dempsey Brothers Hardware, Lansing/Willowdale passed away peacefully in his sleep at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket.
Loving husband for 68 years to Barbara who passed away in June 2017. Father of Janet Avey (Tedd), Jimmy (Sue), John (Gail), Kevin (Veda), and Colleen. Grandfather of 15 grandchildren Jamie (Angela), Ryan (Sandi), Sean, Brendan (Melissa) Fiona, Bryan, Shannon, Christopher, Michael (Suzy), Mathew (Krista), Colin (Ainsley), Tyler (Stephanie), Catherine, Margaret, Rory, and great-grandfather of 9, Brianna, Logan, Nolan, Lachlan, Douglas, Claire, Joseph, Connor, and George.
Jim was a motorcycle enthusiast, purchasing his first
Harley Davidson when he was a teenager, and his next one 50 years later.
He was a member of both the Clearwater and York Region H.O.G. Chapters. He also took motorcycle trips all over North America, beginning in the 1940’s when he proudly rode from Toronto to Mexico. He served with the Canadian Army, Regiment 1477, long time Shriner, boater, cottager at Lake Simcoe and Parry Sound and along with his wife Barbara, was a happy snowbird at Ranchero Village in Largo, Florida, for almost 30 years. They loved to travel and saw much of the world.
Jim was full of energy and enthusiasm. He loved to cook and was famous for his Sunday dinners. He enjoyed his vegetable gardens and was able to paint, build, and repair any DIY projects with great skill. He always enjoyed talking to people, had a great sense of humour, and was rarely on time for anything.
Friends may call on Saturday, December 9th from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street (at Goulding, south of Steeles, Toronto). Funeral Service will be held on Sunday December 10th at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel. A private family interment will take place at a later time at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Jim was a lifetime believer in the good work of the Salvation Army. Any donations to The Salvation Army North York Temple, 25 Centre Avenue, North York, Ontario, M2M 2L4 would be appreciated. Condolences may be left at www. rskane.ca.
The store was built in 1860 and bought by his father George and Uncle Bill in 1921. He and his brother Mickey (Bob) who passed in 2009, were both born and raised in the building where they worked for fifty years. Jim will always be associated with the Dempsey Brothers Hardware formally at the corner of Yonge and Sheppard.
He will be dearly missed
