Obituary for Jakob “Jake” Bergen
Suddenly, on September 25, 2017, Jakob Bergen passed away at 82 years of age.
Jakob was predeceased by his wife Hilde, daughter Angelika, parents Justina and Jakob, and two infant brothers.
Jakob will be deeply missed by his three sons, Randy (Renate), Vern (Suzanne) and Ron (Nicole), his grandchildren, Noelle, Jeremy, Michaela, Ashley (Chris), Marc, Karleigh (Zena), Colin and Angelica, and great-grandchildren Tyla and Lincoln. Also left to mourn are his sisters Maria, Helen (Jake) and Tina, brothers Heinrich (Frieda) and George, and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was born in Nuendorf, Ukraine on January 4, 1935. In 1943, he and his family were forced to leave the Ukraine, making their way to Germany and eventually to Paraguay in 1948. His teen and young adult life was spent in Paraguay as a farmhand doing what he loved the most – riding horses and roping cattle. He was well known for his horsemanship and took great pride in being a cowboy.
In 1958, Dad immigrated to Canada with his parents and younger siblings, where they settled in Winnipeg. A few years later Dad met Mom and on July 27, 1963 they were married.
Dad worked as a carpenter building homes for Qualico for approximately 22 years. Later he went to work for Palliser Furniture, where he remained until he retired. Dad’s passions were his work and his family. In his later years, after Mom passed away, his family and his faith gave him purpose. He was very proud of his three boys and was happy to share their accomplishments with anyone who would listen. In 2012, at the age of 77, Dad was baptized at Douglas Mennonite Church where he faithfully attended until the end.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Douglas Mennonite Church, 1517 Rothesay Street, with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
The family wishes to thank the paramedics and staff at Concordia Hospital for their care and compassion. Also, a huge thank you to Mimi for being there for Dad when it mattered the most. We are forever grateful.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dad’s name to Diabetes Canada, 401-1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4C6.
