We, the family of Isabell (Graham) Andrews, 92, regret to announce her passing on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at the Miner’s Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, where she resided for the past 10 years.
Born in Florence on September 4, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Francis (Frank) and Elizabeth (Elsie)(MacFarlane) Graham.
In 1942, at age 18, Isabell was reported to be the first woman from Florence to volunteer and enlist for the Woman’s Canadian Army Corp. Her postings during WWII took her to Quebec, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
She and Bill began married life in a refurbished garage on Jardine St. in Florence (the locals knew the neighbourhood back then as “dog patch”). She was known to say it was one of the best neighbourhoods to live in.
They eventually moved to Main St., Florence, “Green Hill” where they resided until 1967. They spent their remaining years together on Main St. in Sydney Mines. After Bill’s death she moved to Dwyer Court, where she had a great five years with Ian and Dena, and the other residents, until she was forced by deteriorating health in 2006 to go into nursing care and eventually to the Manor. Much thanks to the staff and residents of the Manor, and especially to Dr. Doug Kohlsmith. The Manor management and staff are to be commended for their professionalism and caring. Many will remember Isabell and her great friend, the late Greta Fraser, running the streets of the “Mines” in their buggies (scooters). Some interesting stories were told.
In her younger years Isabell taught CGIT and night sewing classes in Florence. Her sewing and ceramic creations are family keepsakes. She was a member of several church groups. In her later years, after raising her family, she became a painter, and many of her works hang in the homes of her family and friends. She was one of the artists who painted the large mural on the Rahey building. She also enjoyed her quilting sessions. She will also be remembered in her younger days for her love of picking berries, of any kind, and the great creations that came after, whether it be pies, cakes, or some other tasty treat. Her bread making skills were legendary. Her recipes were sought after, but for reasons unknown no one could quite duplicate them. One thing she always noted was that no matter where she lived, she always had great neighbours. They were “Great Bye”. Her numerous summers at the “cabin” in Ross Ferry gave her many stories to tell. We will miss you “Sparky”.
Isabell is survived by her sons Frank (Marion Jardine), Westmount, Stewart (Margaret Tait), Middle Sackville, daughter Beth (Gil Walters), Wellington, and son Scott (Trudy Anderson), Enfield. Also left to mourn are her eleven (Nan’s) grandchildren; Laurie, Aaron (Rebecca),Junell (Michael), Jennifer (Bevan), Taryn (Bryan), Lauren (Darren), Craig (Renee), Kelly, Liam, Davis and Callen, nine (Nanny Crow’s) great-grandchildren; Tait, Breton, Clara Beth, Brielle, Holly, Bridget, Isabella, Brody and Lux, sisters Winifred (late Ron MacDonald), Wolfville, and Effie (Donald Brown), Sydney Mines, and many nieces and nephews. Effie visited her regularly, and always brought joy to her. Her sisterly love and kindnesses are appreciated and will never be forgotten. Effie is a wonderful example of sisterly love.
Besides her parents, Isabell was predeceased by her William (Bill) in 1998, sister Irene, brother-in-law Lorne Boutilier, sister Francis, brother-in-law John Bardswich, and sister Grace, brother-in-law Nat Fortugno.
There will be no public visitation. The funeral service will be held Sunday, July 16, 2017, at 3:00 p.m., in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Marion-Barclay-MacKay officiating. Honourary pallbearers will be Nan’s grandchildren. Family flowers only, please. Interment in Brookside Cemetery, next to Bill, will be private. Her family suggests, as per Isabell’s wishes, that donations in her memory be made to the Miner’s Memorial Manor, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, or your local food bank.
