Irma Irene Chant
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irma Irene Chant (nee Laming) on April 8, 2017 in her 87th year. Irma was predeceased by her loving husband Claire (October 18, 1997).
Irma had five siblings: Jean (deceased), Giles, Gordon (deceased), Orville and Neita. After the death of her mother when Irma was a child, Irma and three siblings were raised by her Aunt Verona and Uncle Roddy Laming in Kingston. She attended school in Toledo, Ontario where she and Claire met. When Irma graduated from high school, she was hired by the Bank of Montreal in Toronto. Claire and Irma were married on April 8, 1950 in Toronto, and purchased their home on Braywin Dr. in Etobicoke where they were close friends with all of their neighbours. Irma then accepted a position with the North York Board of Education as Executive Assistant to the Principal. She served in this capacity in two different high schools until her retirement. Irma was highly respected, appreciated and loved by both the principals and all office staff.
During her spare time, she devoted many hours to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Humber Heights. She and Claire also enjoyed hosting friends and family at their home.
After retirement, she became a care giver to Claire and continued dedicating time to St. Andrew’s. She capably held many positions and was the go-to person when anyone needed any information or assistance about St. Andrew’s. In 2014, when she relocated to Southern Ontario, St. Andrew’s presented her with an award acknowledging her 57 years of dedicated service to the church.
Her latter days were spent in Sprucedale Care Centre in Strathroy, Ontario where she was cared for with dignity and respect. The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of Sprucedale for the loving care that Irma received during her time there and to the Welch family for their care, compassion and friendship to Irma and Claire for over 60 years.
Visitation will be at Ward Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Road on Friday, April 14th 7-9pm, and at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 1579 Royal York Rd, Toronto Saturday April 15th 11:00am until time of funeral service at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Andrew’s Humber Heights or to the Alzheimer Society.
