Obituary for Helen Marie Layeux
1925 – 2017
In her 93rd year, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, December 28, 2017. Daughter of the late Sarah Malette and Archibald Layeux. She is survived by her brother Gerald (Maggie), and predeceased by her sisters Doris Vincent, Claire Duffy, Irene Turgeon, Aline O’Connor, and her brother Gilbert. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews and their children, as well as her very special and loyal friends Bonnie and Dave Thelen, their children, Gerry and the late Bev Glavin.
Helen is fondly remembered for her love of skiing. She enjoyed many years of skiing with those family and friends. She was the consummate coach and cheerleader on the slopes of Tremblant and Gray Rocks. She also enjoyed the après-ski life at her condo at Cuttles. Helen was a professional ski instructor for most of her life. She started skiing at the age of six and by the age of 13, was competing for the Norland Ski Club of Ottawa where she was mentored by Bud Clarke and won many championships. With the blessing of her mother Sarah, she left family and home at a young age to teach at Collingwood, then at Jasper in Quebec and at Villa Bellevue Ski School at Mont Tremblant. In the early 1960’s, Helen was the Director of the Ski School at Hidden Valley, Somerset, Pennsylvania. She concurrently ran ski tours to the French Alps and Switzerland.
After a successful career in the US, she returned to Ottawa to take care of her aging father. While residing at the Highlands, she carved out a second career in property management, bringing the same joy and enthusiasm to her work as she always displayed on the slopes. She continued her ski instruction on a part time basis at Mont Cascades. Helen was recently honored by the Canadian Ski Instructor’s Alliance, as a 50-year member of the Alliance.
The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the West End Villa and at the Civic Hospital . As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers- National Capital Division, or to the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance.
