Helen Alexandrine Ledwos.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of, Helen Alexandrine Ledwos (nee Sawchuk), at Selkirk General Hospital, on Thursday December 22, 2016, aged 93 years. Helen was predeceased by her parents Ann (nee Wishnowski) and Clifford Sawchuk; her husband Edward Ledwos and siblings Andrew, Betty and Stephanie Boresky (late Walter). Helen will be very deeply missed by her beloved son Clifford (partner David); daughter Karina (husband Danik); and grandchildren Scarlett and Dustin. Helen will be lovingly remembered by her sister Maryann McKenzie (late Urban); nieces Carla (Ian), Anika (Eric) and Marianne (Scott); nephew Rod (Lisa) and extended family and close friends.
Helen was born on February 23, 1923 in East Selkirk, Manitoba where she grew up on the family farm surrounded by a loving family and community of close friends. Helen attended Happy Thought School and later took courses at the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg. Helen began her career as a secretary and then Executive Assistant at the Manitoba Rolling Mills (MRM). In Selkirk, Helen met her husband Edward Lawrence Ledwos, whom she married on October 30, 1948, after Edward returned from serving in WWII. They celebrated 63 years of marriage in 2011. They were blessed with two children, Clifford and Karina. Helen left MRM in order to raise her children. She was a very devoted mother who adored and doted on both of her children.
While raising her children, Helen worked with her father in property development which included owning various rental and commercial properties in Selkirk. In the 1970’s Helen began a very successful career in real estate as a Sales Agent and then a Broker receiving many top sales awards and honours of distinction. She loved real estate and began many long and close friendships because of it.
In addition to her career in real estate Helen loved talking about indiscretions of politics, shopping for clothes and collectables and travelling whether as a weekend jaunt to Grand Forks and Fargo, trips across Canada, or farther afield to Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Florida or the Caribbean. Helen also maintained extensive vegetable and flower gardens at her home – sharing seeds and plants with her children and friends. Some of Helen’s happiest moments were entertaining family and friends with large amounts of food and drink.
Her children would like to thank Dr. Richard Lindenschmidt, the nurses and nurses aids in the Medicine Ward at Selkirk General Hospital, Home Care staff and friends who made the last months of Helen’s life so comfortable.
A service to celebrate Helen’s life will take place at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, Manitoba on Friday December 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Refreshments to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Helen’s name to the Selkirk General Hospital Medicine Unit for Palliative Patients.
