Obituary for Helen Catherine Larson
July 22, 1935-November 4, 2017
Helen passed away peacefully at River East PCH at the age of 82.
Her life’s journey as an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother has ended. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends and all that knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Vern Larson, her children Brian (Susan), David, Steven (Maureen), Carol (John), her beloved grandchildren Derek (Nina), Matt (Stephanie), Megan (Kyle) DeCosse and Taylor (Quinn Mackenzie), Carly and Troy Kubilanski; great grandchildren Linnea and Jack Larson. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Allan Stichbury and his family, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Elaine and Brian Rankin and family.
She was predeceased by her parents Victor and Martha, her sister Peggy and her brother Alan.
Helen was raised on the family farm near Starbuck, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg at a young age with her sister. She enjoyed city life, working, and community dances where she met her future husband Vern. They married in 1957 and soon after purchased a house together, making Winnipeg their permanent home. Vern’s job took the family on brief adventures to other cities in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BC but Winnipeg was always home.
Helen made it her life’s work to create a warm and loving home for her family. Her skills included cooking and baking, gardening, sewing and quilting. She was an avid reader and could be found bouncing a baby on her knee while simultaneously doing a crossword puzzle. She loved babies and children and happily volunteered to babysit even after her own children were grown. Throughout their marriage, Helen and Vern enjoyed an active lifestyle which included many types of dancing, walking, biking, skating and numerous camping trips with the family.
Helen was a devoted grandmother to her six grandchildren, tirelessly nurturing their development through reading, games, and numerous trips to the park and playground. Although unable to continue those activities with her great grandchildren, it was evident that she thoroughly enjoyed their visits.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring and compassionate staff of River East Personal Care Home where Mom was a resident.
A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery).
In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted to Heart and Stroke Foundation
