Service Details
Grant Wesley Froman
April 10, 1942 – November 3, 2017
After a 17 year battle with COPD, Grant peacefully left this life with his family at his side.
He was predeceased by his father, Frank; mother Lucinda; brothers George and Delbert, and sister Debbie. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Dorothy; daughters Barbara and Karen; grandchildren Hayley and Logan; sisters Violet of New York, Ginny of Toronto, Norrie (Oz) of Victoria and niece Kathy Schroter (Perry) of Nanaimo.
Grant was born in Ohsweken, Six Nations Reserve, Grand River, Ontario. He was very proud of his Mohawk heritage. As a Residential School Survivor, Grant experienced some of the challenges of that legacy. He dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren and was proud of their accomplishments. He will be greatly missed.
Grant was a hard worker and always strove to do his best. In the 1970s, he worked for Child and Family Services in Winnipeg with the Indigenous community, as one of the first Indigenous social workers. He was actively involved in the establishment of the Indian and Métis Friendship Centre in Winnipeg. Grant then worked at Kleysen Transport until he retired due to his illness.
He enjoyed travelling and we went on many enjoyable camping trips. Grant loved living at the lake for the last ten years and although he was unable to fully enjoy the outdoors the peace and beauty that surrounded him was a blessing.
Our heartfelt thanks to the nursing and medical staff in the emergency and medical surgical unit at Selkirk Regional Health Centre. Your care was superb. The compassion shown by the little things you did for Grant made us feel we mattered as a family.
At Grants request there will not be a service. The family will hold a Celebration of his life in the summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Grants memory to the University of Winnipeg’s Opportunity Fund. This fund makes it possible for Aboriginal, refugee and immigrant, and inner- city students in need, and also provides tuition waivers for youth raised in the child welfare system. Online donations can be made at www.uwinnipeg.ca/foundation/ways-to-give or by calling Toll free: 1-866-394-6050. Local calls: 204-786-9995.
