Gerry passed peacefully away after a lengthy illness, in the presence of his family. His devoted wife of 44 years Regina (Cantwell) and his cherished daughter Ashlee (Paul Fleming) were constantly at his side throughout his illness.
Predeceased by his parents Gerry and Irene (Furlong) Angel; parents-in-law Frank and Margaret Cantwell; two sisters Anna (Woolgar) and Reeni Angel; beloved niece, Renata Withers; adored neighbours and best friends Angela and Martin Hickey.
In addition to Regina and Ashlee, Gerry is survived by his sister Catherine (Bob Squires) and three brothers, Bob (Roseanne), Pat (Libby) and John (Ann); Regina’s sisters: Helena (Bud Bragg), Dolores (Vince Withers) and Agnes; Regina’s brothers: Gerry Cantwell (Dorothy) and Ted Cantwell (Donna); many, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special thanks to nephew, Christopher Withers, who is more of a brother to Ashlee than cousin, along with his continued support for his Aunt Ginie; Gerry’s coffee buddies at Tim’s & McDonalds; the Mahon family, whom he met through his hospital stay, who will be lifelong friends; the staffs of 4 South B at the HSC and of 3 South at St. Pat’s Mercy Home. Also, never to forget her “Poppy” – his fur baby, Chloe, who loved each other dearly.
Gerry was inducted into the NL Sports Hall of Fame in recognition for his contribution to golf in NL. He was one of the founding members of the Pippy Park Golf Course.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Caul’s Funeral Home, Lemarchant Road on Wednesday November 29, 2017 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Funeral service from St. Pius X Church on Thursday November 30, 2017 at 9:30am.
Flowers gratefully accepted or donations sent in Gerry’s memory to the Eating Disorder Foundation of NL.
