Obituary Overview
Florence King (neé Butcher)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a remarkable lady, our mother, grandmother and Nana, Florence King at the age of 103½ on December 19, 2017.
Florence was born in 1914 in Conquest, SK. She was the second eldest child of William and Effie Butcher. She was raised with her seven siblings in Conquest and Surbiton. She started working at a young age, returning home to look after her younger siblings. In 1936, Florence married Burrell King of Harris, SK. They farmed for many years near Harris before retiring and moving permanently to Harris. Florence was very involved in the community and could always be counted on to supply goodies, especially diabetic goodies. She was a legendary card player and could out peg anyone in crib! She curled for many years, specializing in the playing lead. In later years, she enjoyed bowling and bowled well into her eighties. Florence was an expert crossword puzzle solver and an avid reader. Her creative pursuits included knitting, crocheting and sewing. She and Burrell had a large garden just outside of Harris that they expertly maintained for many years. In her late eighties, Florence moved into Saskatoon and became a resident of Kiwanis Manor. She spent many happy years there gardening in pots on her patio. We had a well-attended Come & Go Tea when she turned ninety, and a smaller family celebration when she turned 100. Shortly after turning 100, due to health concerns, she moved into The Palisades Personal Care Home where she still insisted on making her own bed daily. Thank you to the staff at The Palisades for their care and concern during her stay.
Florence was predeceased by her husband Burrell in 1986, her son in law John Sutherland in 2002, and her daughter in law Joan King in 2012. She was the last surviving sibling in her family, predeceased by: Bernice, George, Mervin, Joyce, Vera, Ivor, and very special sister Marion.
Left to fondly remember Florence are her: DAUGHTER Nora Sutherland and granddaughters Amy and Karen; SON William and grandsons Scott and Brent and his wife Lisa. Nana was the beloved great grandma to Hayden, Ethan and Brady.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral service. There will be a private burial next to Burrell in Rosetown.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
