Evelyn May (Johnson) STAPLES - 2017

Evelyn May Staples passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Rose Villa at the age of 93 years. Evelyn was born at Leney, Saskatchewan on March 12, 1924, the third child to Albert and Annie May Johnson, who ran a telephone exchange there.
The family moved to Madison, Saskatchewan in 1928. In 1932, the family moved to Glidden, Saskatchewan where her dad became the Secretary Treasurer of the R.M. of Newcombe No. 260. Her brother joined the army in 1939 and served overseas until the end of the war. While in England, he married Olive Thorton and she came to Canada in 1946. However, they went back to England in 1948.
One highlight in Evelyn’s life was when she was still going to school and was spending the summer holidays on a farm with her godparents. Aunt Lillie made the best raspberry tarts and they were always quite handy in the pantry.
Following school, Evelyn started to work in an office and took a secretarial course by correspondence. She married Lorne Smith in January of 1944 and moved to live on a ranch which was quite a change from the village life. They ran the community pasture until 1951 and then moved to Turtleford to farm. They trucked the cattle to Turtleford but trailed the horses on foot, which was quite a trek. During this time, her father remarried and eventually retired to Moose Jaw in 1951.
After 19 years of marriage, a separation and a divorce, Evelyn moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatoon and then finally to Rosetown where she retired in 1989 after 26 years as a store clerk for Stout’s Shop-Rite and the Rosetown Co-op.
Evelyn belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star and the Anglican Church Ladies A.C.W. and held offices in both organizations.
Evelyn married Graham Staples in May 1990. Together they did a lot of traveling, especially to visit his family as well as bus trips to Arizona and Alaska. They also enjoyed their evening drives around the country, playing shuffleboard and cards. Graham did not like to fly so Evelyn’s trips to England to visit her brother and family were made alone.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Trinity Anglican Lutheran Church with Rev. Lauren Miller officiating. Memorial Donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Trinity Anglican Lutheran Church.
