Elaine Long (nee Linton; nee Mullaly) passed away peacefully, of complications of ovarian cancer, at the Red Deer Hospice on Monday, December 21, 2015 at the age of 75 years. Elaine is survived by her husband, Garry Long; daughter, Marilyn Wilson (nee Long); grandsons, Kyle Wilson (Bella Specht) and Jacob Wilson; brother, Harvey Linton (Fran); a large extended family, and numerous friends. She was predeceased by her first husband, Glen Mullaly in 1966; mother, Margaret Fredrick (nee Rathgeber; nee Linton) in 1970; father, Delos Linton in 1986; and brother, Ken Linton in 2004. Elaine was born on July 27, 1940 in Edmonton, AB to Margaret and Delos Linton. She was the second of three children, including Ken and Harvey. She spent the majority of her childhood growing up with her mother and brothers in Lantzville, BC where many of her fondest memories included playing in the ocean and on the beach near her home. She finished Secretarial school in 1957 and quickly moved up the secretarial ladder at the various companies she worked for. She married Glen Mullaly in 1958 and was devastated by his accidental death in 1966. Following Glen’s death, Elaine chose a life filled with adventure. She took flying lessons, obtaining her private pilot’s license in 1968. She then decided to move to Yellowknife, NWT to experience the arctic. She was in the midst of planning a three year, round the world solo trip when she met and fell in love with Garry Long. Her trip was reduced to three months in Australia in order to accommodate their wedding. On her return trip, she was unsure if she would miss the wedding due to aircraft problems, but she made it and they were married two days later in 1969. Elaine and Garry soon moved to Grande Prairie, AB and welcomed a daughter, Marilyn in 1972. From there, Elaine and Marilyn made annual Easter trips out to Vancouver Island so Elaine could “get her ocean fix.” 1986 brought a family move to Edmonton and a return to extensive travel as Garry could get cheap air tickets through his job at Time Air. Elaine was amazed that she was lucky enough to go to places like Pompeii for the weekend. Garry and Elaine bought a motor home in 1990 and moved it out to Richmond, BC where Garry continued to work for Time Air. There, Elaine was able to self-publish her book, “To Capture a Cowboy: The Story of Ralph Rathber,” a biography of a favorite uncle, in 1992. Elaine and Garry then spent two years working in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Garry worked eight weeks on; four weeks off so travel opportunities were endless. They backpacked across South East Asia, toured the Middle East, and saw many other parts of the world. They returned to Canada and to full time motor home living in 1994. Over the next few years, they travelled extensively over most of North America, avoiding winter if possible, as Elaine was not a fan of cold and ice. In 1999, Elaine and Garry gave up their motor home, camperized a cargo van, and moved to an apartment in Hinton, AB, where Marilyn was living with her family. More International travel followed, and then a move to Lacombe, AB, near where Marilyn and her family had moved. Marilyn joked that as an only child with the only grandchildren, she couldn’t escape as Elaine and Garry kept following her. In 2009, Elaine and Garry moved in with Marilyn, Kyle, and Jacob in order to escape their smoky apartment and to be of assistance to Marilyn when she returned to school. The arrangement brought Elaine and Marilyn closer and gave Kyle and Jacob a chance to get to know their grandparents in a way that would not normally be possible. In 2013, Elaine developed ovarian cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation but a cure was not to be. She was able to remain at home until October, 2015 and then entered Red Deer Hospice, where she passed away two months later. Elaine chose not to have a memorial service. Her ashes will be scattered on the beach in Lantzville, BC at a later date. Her family would like to thank all friends and family who have called or stopped in to offer support, as well as the wonderful staff of Red Deer Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Red Deer Hospice Society: 99 Arnot Avenue Red Deer, AB T4R 3S6 Phone: 403-309-4344 Fax: 403-347-4356 Email: admin@reddeerhospice.com.
