Death Notice
RECHNITZER, Dr. Peter A. – Peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospice on Saturday, April 15, 2017, Dr. Peter A. Rechnitzer, B.A., FRCP, FRCP(C), FACC, LLD, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Western University, in his 92nd year. He is survived by his beloved wife Lili, his son Mark (Morgan), daughter Erica (Charles Boone), his stepsons Karel Vlach (Jennifer), Eric Vlach and Michael Vlach (Holli). His grandchildren are Lara, Sami, Gabrielle, Aidan and Nathaniel. Also remembered by his cherished nephew, Hani Farghaly. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Tiana Gaddishaw and his grandson Alex Vlach. Dr. Rechnitzer graduated in Medicine at UWO in 1948. After postgraduate training in London, Toronto, University of Edinburgh and Duke University he began a consulting practice in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in London. He initiated the concept of cardiac rehabilitation in 1964 and was the co-founder of the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging in 1980 and was its first director. Dr. Rechnitzer was the director of a medical television series from 1965-1970. He was given the Dr. Ivan Smith Award for alumni of the year in 2006 and received an Honourary degree from Western in 2007. Memorial reception at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond on Wednesday, April 19 from 3-6 pm. A private family service will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging at Western University or St. Joseph’s Hospice.
