Douglas Frank Colwell, P.
Eng., of Fredericton, NB., joined his Lord on December 28,
Born on April 10, 1936,
in Woodstock, NB, Doug is survived by his wife and best friend, Marie
(Granter) Colwell, two wonderful daughters Catherine (Dana) Coughlan,
and Lorraine (David) Barton and four grandchildren, Matthew (Trinda),
Chris (Mercedee), Andrew (Ashley) and Kathryn de Monyé, two
great grandchildren, Jacob and Calvin, sister Dorothy Donahue and
brother-in-law Harry (Carol) Granter, nieces, nephews, and extended
family. Doug was predeceased by parents Percy and Winifred
(Davies) Colwell and son-in-law William de Monyé. Doug
graduated from Woodstock High School in 1954 and later graduated from
UNB with a BSc in Civil Engineering in 1959.
Doug began his career
with Harbours and Rivers Engineering in St. John’s,
NL. It was in St. John’s that he met his beautiful
wife Marie. Later, the family moved to Fredericton where Doug was
employed by the Provincial Department of Supply and Services for 26
years, retiring in 1996 as Executive Director, Hospital Design and
Construction. His last project was the Miramichi Regional
Hospital. He then established DFC Consulting Ltd. and worked until his
passing as an Engineering Consultant.
Doug had a contagious
love for life, and others, and was very involved in his church, and
his community. In the church, he loved singing in the choir,
was Moderator for many years, and chaired various Boards and
Committees, including Trustees, Music, and Board of Deacons.
In the community, Doug served as Chair and on various Association
Boards and Committees including but not limited to; President of
APEGNB, Chair of the Board of Governors of Theatre New Brunswick,
President and member of the Fredericton Golden Club, and member of the
Board of Directors of Science East. Doug’s
volunteering also included the Fredericton Community Kitchen and
Salvation Army Kettle Fund.
He enjoyed bowling, going
to hockey games with his buddies, and playing golf, but mostly he
enjoyed the innumerable relationships that gave his life such
A celebration of
Doug’s life will be held at Grace Memorial Baptist Church on
Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 1:00p.m. A reception and time
to visit with the family will follow the service. Interment
will take place at a later date in the Woodstock Rural
