Dorothy was born in Winnipeg on June 10, 1927, and grew up on Ingersoll Street during the war years. After graduating from Daniel Mac, she attended Normal School to become a teacher. She began her career in “the country” at the age of 19, where she made friendships that lasted throughout her life. After three years, she returned to Winnipeg and continued in Winnipeg School Division, teaching at Isaac Brock, Principal Sparling, and Greenway schools. She taught elementary school for 41 years, earning her B.A. along the way. Over the years, she received letters and cards from former students wanting to keep in touch and letting her know what an inspiration she had been to them.
Throughout her life, she travelled extensively with friends, bringing home stories and treasures from all over the world. For many years, she was an active member of St. James Anglican Church, the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Winnipeg, the St. James Lawn Bowling Club, and the Winnipeg Teachers’ Bowling League.
Dorothy was always a very kind, gentle and generous lady who made a positive impression on everyone. She was very easy-going and always tried to help others. She loved being with family and spoiled her nieces and nephews as they grew up. Dorothy lived with her parents and lovingly cared for them in their later years. For the last 25 years, she shared a home with her sister Joyce and a series of beloved pets.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 2:00pm at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue. Winnipeg, MB
