Donald Mason Beattie of Woodstock, NB passed away at his home on Monday February 20, 2107 at the age of 82.
Born 1934 – The only son of Jack Mason Beattie and Adeline Margaret (Edwards) Beattie in Goderich, Ontario. He graduated from Leaside High school in Toronto. He also achieved Gr. 10 in the Royal Conservatory of Music in piano. After graduation he joined National Cash Register and started working on his accounting degree. He became the youngest office Manager in Canada in Peterborough, Ontario.
He met his wife Margaret Adamson at a United Church Youth group ( Winter Camp ) in Norval, Ontario and they married in 1956.
He achieved his C.P.A. (C.A.) degree in 1961. At the time he was Internal auditor with the CNR in Montreal.
He checked out trucking companies in the Maritimes. One Company was Day & Ross in Hartland. On his return to Montreal, he received a call from owner of Day & Ross offering him a chance to Co-Own Day & Ross. In 1963 he moved his family to Woodstock, NB where he introduced to the concept of owner operator to Day & Ross and to the Maritime trucking industry. It was successful!
He became a consultant to the trucking industry and offered workshops throughout the Maritime Provinces. Day & Ross prospered and he sold his shares to the McCain Group and invested in the John Deere franchise in Hartland, NB.
He then partnered with Raymond Cook. It prospered and in 1978 he sold out to Mr. Cook. During this time he became Treasurer of the Woodstock Curling club and the Woodstock Golf club.
He volunteered as coach in Minor Baseball and Minor Hockey and became President of the Minor Hockey.
He was a great supporter of the Woodstock Arts Council, and was on the committee to rejuvenate the Carleton County Music Festival in 1984.
Over the years he has served as treasurer for the Woodstock Arts Council and helped keep it fiscally strong so it could help local arts groups when there was a need. At many functions over the years he led sing songs while his wife Marg played the piano.
After his retirement in 1999 he and Marg escaped the winter to spend time with friends in Florida.
There he was an active in Bocci and dancing at the Club. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and all their achievements, and they gave him credit for his advice as they pursued their education and life choices.
Don is survived by his wife Margaret Beattie; two sons Brian Beattie (Kelly Bennett) and Garry Beattie, Lori Duggan; one daughter Lori Beattie (Keith Dewing); grandchildren Bradley Beattie, Coltan Beattie, Oscar Dewing and Eve Dewing.
Resting at the Scott Funeral Home 815 Main Street, Woodstock, NB with Visiting on Thursday Feb 23, 2017 from 3pm – 7pm. Funeral Service will be held on Friday Feb 24, 2017 at 11 am from the Saint James United Church, Woodstock, NB. Rev Debra Baker will be officiating with internment in The Woodstock Rural Cemetery at a later date.
If desired donations may be made to The Saint James United Church, The Canadian Red Cross or a Memorial of the donor’s choice.
