Bruce died peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 2, 2017 in his 87th year. Devoted and loving husband for 62 years of Dawn West (predeceased) of Gravenhurst , formerly of Mississauga. Dearest father of Susan VanGerven (Bill) of Gravenhurst and Robert West (Tracy) of Burlington. Cherished grandfather of David Speicher (Erin) of Toronto, Jennifer Speicher (Zac) of Gravenhurst, Andrew West (Amy) of Mississauga, Samantha West (Shane) of Mississauga and Joshua VanGerven (Megan) of Gravenhurst. Proud great-grandfather to Nathan and Jacob Speicher of Toronto. Uncle Bruce will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Bruce was born and raised in Toronto and began his accounting career at Coca-Cola Canada. He then went on to become Controller of the Fruehauf Trailer Company of Canada for many years. In retirement his skills were sought out by Muskoka Transport of Bracebridge, first as Controller then in an advisory capacity.
Next to his family, his greatest passion was for his antique automobiles, including both attending and coordinating car shows. He would drive his beloved 1935 Plymouth & 1937 Chrysler Airflow to area shows including the one he held yearly at Gravenhurst’s Grace and Speed on the wharf where he also voluntarily conducted tours.
In keeping with Bruce’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a gathering to celebrate his life is planned for Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Bruce’s home in Gravenhurst. Please call the family for further information. If so desired, donations in honour of Bruce may be directed to the Diabetes Association. Arrangements entrusted to the Cavill-Turner Funeral Home, Gravenhurst.
