Beulah Isabelle Olson – 1923 – 2017

Obituary for Beulah Olson
Beulah Olson
Dec 15, 1923 – Sept 4, 2017
Beulah passed away peacefully at Rainy River Long term care on Monday September 4, 2017.
She was born in her grandmother’s home in Spooner, MN to Alfred and Emma Sandmoen of McInnes Creek, ON, where she spent her childhood. She was predeceased by sister Myrtle, brothers Milton, Leo, Miles, Clifford, Harold, Richard and Earl. She is survived by sister Sandra Ross (St. Catherines) whose visit last week was so special.
In 1942 she married Roy Wood and moved to Rainy River. Beulah and Roy had 5 children: Denver (Beverly), Ronald (Ann), Rebecca, Barbara and Ralph. When the trains changed from Steam engines to diesel, lack of work meant the family would move to Winnipeg. For the first time, Beulah had running water to wash clothes and bathe her children. In 1978 Roy died of heart failure and Beulah was left to raise the two youngest children alone.
Sixteen years later she attended a reunion in Rainy River where she became re acquainted with Bill Olson. They were married the following spring in Kelowna where they spent the first 10 years of marriage. Then in 2006 they moved back to Rainy River where they spent the next ten years together in their home on First Street. They enjoyed being able to spend lots of time with old friends and family again, and the “parking lot” on First was rarely empty. Bill’s family added 4 stepchildren:
Dale, Marvin, Cheryl (Bradley)Marusyk, and David(Barbara).
In 2015 Beulah suddenly became deaf and shortly after Bill was diagnosed with kidney failure. They worked together and helped each other with their afflictions, Bill doing home dialysis 4 times a day, Beulah helping with record-keeping. Bill writing his messages to her and Beulah cooking and keeping house as she always had. Bill passed away in March 2016. Beulah missed him dearly but never one to give up, she insisted on staying in the home she loved and faced each day with an optimism that never wavered. At the end of July Beulah realized that her health would not allow her to stay at home. She entered long term care with that same sweet smile for all she met. Her love for others was reflected back to her by the residents and caring staff of health workers in what her family believes is the best place ever! Thank you Rainy River Long term Care facility.
She will be missed by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and even 4 great-greats, also many nieces and nephews, all of whom were so loved.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held on Friday September 8, 2017 at 11 a.m. from the Rainy River Evangelical Covenant Church with Rev. Frances Flook officiating. Interment will follow in McInnes Creek Cemetery.
If desired memorial donations may be made in Beulah’s memory to the McInnes Creek Chapel or the Rainy River Hospital Auxiliary, c/o Northridge Funeral Home, Box 89, Emo, Ontario P0W 1E0. Online condolences may be left at www.northridgefuneralhome.com
