Obituary for B. Allan Keys
Peacefully at home surrounded by his family, in his 100th year. Beloved and loving husband of Catherine (Katie) Moore for over 42 wonderful years. Dearly loved and loving father of Elizabeth Harrison (Lisa), wonderful loving Gramp to Kristin Harrison (Derek) and great Gramp to Hattie McParland. Al will also be sadly missed by his brother in law, Garry Moore (Velma) and his friend, Ronald Harrison(Donna); his sisters in law Ruth Keys and Vera Keys, as well as many nieces and nephews. Al was the son of Robert Benjamin Keys and Rachel Ann Turner, he was predeceased by his first wife, Ida Thompson in 1972, his infant son Jeffrey in 1964, and his three brothers, Harvey (late Julene), Mervyn (Vera), Gordon (Ruth). Al was born on August 21, 1918 in Zurich, Ontario and grew up on the family farm during the great depression. He attended a one room school where he was a sponge for knowledge and high school in Seaforth. He graduated in Science (Chemistry) from The University of Western Ontario in 1939 and received an MBA from Harvard University in 1951. He was a distiller at Schenley’s, President of Nesbit Fruit products, Vice President of Ottawa Cablevision and a Research Officer at the Economic Council of Canada. After retiring from the Council, he changed careers in 1968 and after a year of study became an investment counselor until he retired in 1994. This was his favorite and most rewarding occupation and he often said he wished he’d started sooner. In our retirement years we enjoyed golfing, curling and traveling while spending summers at our cottage. Al was generous with his time and served on several community committees as well as several planning and service boards of his Church, Parkdale United. Our family owes a debt of gratitude to the many kind, compassionate caregivers who made it possible for me to look after Al until he died quietly at home, which was his wish. We also thank Dr Robin Beardsley and Dr Lisa Cross who brought us so kindly and gently through this process. Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave. (at Richmond Road), Ottawa on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 6 to 9pm. Funeral Service to be held on Saturday, October 7 at 12 noon at Parkdale United Church, Parkdale at Gladstone. As an expression of sympathy donations to Parkdale United’s Memorial Endowment Fund would be appreciated.
