Arthur Richard Sweet – 2017

Dr. Arthur (Art) Richard Sweet
1942 – 2017
Dr. Arthur (Art) Sweet passed away peacefully at his home on March 5, 2017 at the age of 74. Art was born in Lloydminster, Sask. in November 1942 and moved as a young boy to the family farm by Gull Lake, Alta. He thoroughly enjoyed growing up on the farm. He found that plowing the fields was an excellent opportunity to rock hunt! He found many lovely treasures this way. He talked fondly of wild strawberry jam, berry picking, hunting grouse and fishing at the lake. He enjoyed the outdoors, questioning and learning about the natural world. He attended a one room schoolhouse (Meadowbrook), until grade 6. He then went onto Crestomere School, where it seems a highlight was being able to buy $0.01 jaw breakers at a store across from the school. Grade 12 was completed in Ponoka and then he was off to University in Edmonton. Rather by chance, he ended up taking a Bachelor of Science with a major in Geology, completed in 1963. After completing his degree he was a geological assistant and science teacher before completing his Ph.D in 1972 from the University of Calgary, majoring in palynology. Art worked at the Geological Survey of Canada for over 40 years. His contributions to palynology and the stratigraphy of the Western Interior Basin in Canada are well recognized. He was an expert in his field, a world renowned leader in terrestrial palynology and a role model for the mutual benefits of collaborative research.
During these years, he met and married his wife of 50 years, Alberta. Together they raised three children. He will be dearly missed by Alberta, their children and grandchildren: David, his children Matthew (Lisa), Adam, Julia and their mother Amy; Patrick, his wife Rebecca, and their children Ruby and Eleanor; and Karilynn, her husband Ryan, and their children Coral and William.
His interests were wide ranging. Art and Alberta were hobby beekeepers for over 30 years and passionate gardeners. To all those that knew Art, he had a penchant for self-sufficiency, generosity, hard work and critical thinking. He was described as witty, intelligent, imaginative and modest. He had a nearly encyclopedic memory, was meticulous and professional. He was a naturally curious person with a skill at mentoring and teaching.
He is survived by his siblings, Marilyn, Ron (Margaret), Jim (Eleanor), sister-in-law Bess and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Marion Sweet and brother-in-law, Floyd.
A celebration of Art’s life will be held at Bow Valley Christian Church (5300 53rd Ave NW) on Monday the 13th of March, at 1:00 pm. Funeral arrangements are in care of Choice Memorial. In lieu of flowers please consider planting a tree or shrub in your yard.

Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Arthur Richard
