Obituary for Arthur James Spelliscy
Arthur James (Art) Spelliscy May 24, 1919 – December 19, 2016
Art Spelliscy passed away peacefully on December 19, 2016 in Calgary, Alberta with family by his side, just 2½ years shy of turning 100 years old. Art was born in Balcarres, Saskatchewan one of 7 children, and was raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. He married Kathryn (Kae) McConnell, in Regina on August 22, 1942. Those who knew Art knew him as a solitary man, who valued family above all else. As with many of his generation, and like some of his brothers, Art served in the Canadian military and he was very proud of this. While in the Air Force he and Kae lived in Gimli, Manitoba and in Calgary, Alberta. When Art retired from a career with Imperial Oil, first as a field representative in Saskatchewan and later in the accounting department in Edmonton, he moved back to Regina and opened his own business. He owned a small strip mall and ran the gas station. Art also had a true love of sports – and it didn’t matter which sport – he loved them all. He played hockey growing up, including playing for a number of teams while in the Air Force, and well into his 80’s still enjoyed a round of golf, typically beating his much younger nephew. Art’s second passion was for cars, and at any given time he owned at least three or four vehicles, much to the chagrin of his family and neighbours. Art is survived by his daughter MJ (Mary Jane) Spelliscy of Madison, New Jersey, sister Mary (Spelliscy) Roberge of Calgary, sisters-in-law Isabel and Marguerite Spelliscy (both in Edmonton, Alberta), and Rita Spelliscy (in Orange, California). Very special thanks go to Mary Roberge and family, and Leah (Spelliscy) Patmore and family for the love and kindness they showed in supporting Art in his final years while in Calgary. A Memorial Service will be held in Calgary later in January 2017, with final interment with Kae in Regina. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared through www.evanjstrong.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Society of Alberta (to which Art donated for several years), or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of EVAN J.
