Andrew Sjogren – October 5, 1929 – September 17, 2017 (age 87)

Andrew Sjogren passed away September 17, 2017 at Mont St. Joseph’s home in Prince Albert at the age of 87. Andrew was born to Anna & Andrew Sjogren October 5, 1929 at the family home in Deer Ridge. He and his twin sister were the youngest of five. The family had immigrated to Canada from Sweden in 1927 with the three older siblings: Bertil, Elis & Vasti. Andrew grew up on the farm, and working there took priority over such things as going to school. Even though he only had a grade six education, he was self-taught in electrical, plumbing, welding and carpentry. He helped on the farm and as he got older spent winters in the bush logging. Andrew married his love and life partner Shirley Meier July 11, 1953. Dad had purchased his first quarter section of land in Deer Ridge the year before they married. This is where they began their new life together. In 1960 they built the new family home and in 1979 Dad added extra living space. Mom is still living on the farm today. Together they raised four children: Gary (1958), Lori (1959), and eight years later Kim & Tim (1967). This year was their 64th wedding anniversary.
Dad farmed pretty much his whole life, but also did many off the farm jobs: taxi driver, school bus driver, even bread baker, had a backhoe and with the help of Gary did excavating projects. Dad also spent many years working at Prince Albert National Park until he retired at 65; he continued to enjoy helping Gary on the farm as harvest was his favorite time. He always did whatever he had to in order to support his family. Dad was a jack of all trades, he could build it, fix it, weld it or remodel almost anything – everything was done with the upmost patience. He was always the guy you could turn to when you needed help with anything. Many of the grandchildren were taught how to change oil, tires, and tackle any other mechanical projects thanks to Grandpa. Dad loved his family dearly, but the family pets almost more. His last years at home they were his greatest joy; the family dog shared toast and jam with Dad every morning. He also loved to garden, cut the grass and look after the forest of trees he planted along their driveway. A wonderful reminder for all of us every time we visit the farm. Five o clock every day was time for a shot of whiskey with Pepsi, and if anyone came for a visit they also were always offered a drink. Dad and Mom spent many, many evenings with the neighbors having card parties, which he really enjoyed. Family get togethers always involved cards, dice or in the summer bocci ball. Dad moved to Mont St. Joseph’s in 2014; Dad had advanced Alzheimer’s and Mom was no longer able to look after him at home. He was well cared for at Mont St Joseph’s, and we would like to thank the caregivers, nursing staff and chaplain Eldon Danielson for taking such good care of him.
Andrew is survived by his wife Shirley; his son Gary (Colleen) and their children Richelle (John Lambiris) and Justin (Jenn) and 6 great grandchildren; his daughter Lori (Pat Biel) and her children Jill (Ian Thomas), Carla (Greg Skauge), Amber, Drew (Jannelle), Megan (Sean Meston), Brittney (Mitch Cartier) and 12 great grandchildren; his son Tim; his daughter Kim (Con Herzog) and their sons Brandon (Shana) and Daniel (Jessica) and 2 great grandchildren.
Andrew was predeceased by a newborn son Brian; his son in law Brian Burgess; his grandson Devon; his brothers and sisters: Bertil, Elis, Annie & Vasti; his brother in law Wally Meier and his wife Shirley. At Andrew’s request there will be no funeral service. The family will lay him to rest in Deer Ridge at a later date. We will always remember Dad/ Grandpa for his patience, his ability to fix anything, his ingenuity, and his love for family and pets. Rest in peace dad.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306-922-4729).
