Obituary for Allen Valentine
Peacefully in his sleep, Allen passed away on August 16, 2017. He earned his B.Sc. and his B.Ed. when the Valentine family was living in St. James and his B.A. a few years later. He began his career teaching science at St. James Collegiate. He then lived and taught at the United College and was the Dean of Residence. Al was also the president of the St. James Kiwanis Club from 1969-1970. Al then spent his summers doing his M.Ed. at the Ontario Institute of Education at the University of Toronto. He then moved to the Seven Oaks School Division and first worked as a guidance counsellor at Garden City Collegiate and then as principal of Collicutt Elementary School. Al and Lillian (Bonnie) were married on August 14, 1972 and took up residence in Westwood where their son David Allen was born. Needless to say, Al was a very proud father. In 1978 he became the President of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society. He faced many challenges but one of the things that he was very pleased about was that the Manitoba Teachers’ Code of Professional Practice passed during his tenure. Al then worked for the Seven Oaks School Division as a school administrator until his retirement in 1996.
Al often volunteered his time and abilities including with the Irish Association of Manitoba, being a volunteer security coordinator at the Pan Am Games in 1999 and later served on the board of the Contemporary Dancers. However, what he had enjoyed most was managing the soccer team at Maples Collegiate and he was thrilled when the team won the provincial championships. Al also had several jobs after he retired but thoroughly enjoyed supervising the student teachers when they did their practice teaching in the schools. He became a marriage commissioner and was in much demand since being married by a Valentine appealed to many couples. Al also provided counselling to young people who were trying to get their lives “on track” and he was proud of those who have accomplished this. Most of all, he was so proud of their son David and what he has achieved in both his professional and personal life and who put both on hold for many months helping his parents during Allen’s final illness. Needless to say, Al also loved being Papa to Henry and Liam.
Allen was predeceased by his parents Gwynn Allen and Sarah Harriet (Carse) Valentine, his sister Patricia Vipond and his cousin Allen Montgomery of Kent, England. We can’t thank his wife Janet enough for keeping us informed as the how the family in England and Ireland are doing. More recently, Al was also predeceased last December by his cousin Edward Bate of San Francisco, California.
Left to mourn his loss are his wife Lillian, his son David Allen (Michelle) and grandsons Liam Allen and Henry John Valentine as well as his nieces Tannis McKenzie (Scott) of Traverse Bay, Valerie Hornbaker (Chad) of Anchorage Alaska, and Joanne Barnes (Adam) of Calgary and their children. Also left to mourn his loss are his cousin Elaine Dumonceaux (Roland), John Dumonceaux and Nicole (Travis) Malnar of Minneapolis, Natalie (Ross) MacDonald of Winnipeg, Diane Tyson (Hugh) of Salmon Arm, B.C. Dennis Bishop (Carolyn) of Toronto and their families.
The celebration of Allen’s life will be held at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre (located at 3030 Notre Dame Avenue) on September 7th, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. The family can’t thank the staff at the St. Boniface Palliative Care Ward enough for the wonderful and compassionate care that he received while he was there. Donations to Cancer Care would be greatly appreciated.
