Obituary for Agnes Evelyn Giles (Wesley)
Giles, Agnes Evelyn (nee Wesley) of Welland and native of Texas, passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side after a brief and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, November 5, 2017 in her 82nd year. Beloved wife of 56 years to Leo. Devoted mother of Mitzi Gimenez (Alain), Melanie Stevenson (Carlo Vite), Robert Mitchell, Angela Daley (Dan) and predeceased by daughter Marsha Mitchell. Loving sister of Lucy Holman, Marie Martinez Richter and predeceased by brother John Wesley. Cherished grandmother of David Stevenson (Anamaria) J. Wesley Stevenson (Andreia), Brent Stevenson, Kristen Statema (Case), Steven Aston (Veronica Miles), Kelly Aston, Samantha Mitchell (Jake Nixon) and 8 great grandchildren.
Agnes was born and raised in Northern Texas. She was married to Robert Melvin Mitchell and had 4 children. She was remarried in 1961 to Fonthill native, Leo Giles and had her 5th child. They moved to Welland in 1963. In Texas, she was trained as a hairdresser but spent most of her working life as a floral designer at Goodman’s Florist.
She was a dedicated volunteer of the Canadian Cancer Society, the Arthritis Society and the Welland Hospital Auxillary. She enjoyed creating hand crafted items; knitting and crocheting items for family and donations, playing cards and bingo and listening to country music. A highlight for her was attending her annual family reunion and high school homecoming in Texas. Her greatest joy came from family gatherings and time spent with close friends. The family would like to thank the staff of the Welland Hospital, complex care unit for their compassionate care.
Family and friends will be received at the James L. Pedlar Funeral Home, 1292 Pelham St., Fonthill on Saturday, November 11th from 12 noon -2 pm. A memorial service to honour Agnes’s life will begin at 2 pm. A reception with light refreshments will follow the service. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
