Passed away at Juravinski Hospital, Hamilton, on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the age of 91. Dearly loved wife of the late Bruce Leask (1993), and much-loved wife of John K. Binkley. Loving mother to Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Best and her husband Gary of Waterdown, and Patricia Ann (Patty) Davies and her husband Don of Tillsonburg. Irene also has five adorable great-grandchildren; Oliver, Caleb, Benjamin, Lila, Jessica, and one on the way. Predeceased by her parents Mary Featherstone of Nelson Township, and Thomas Bowen of Radnorshire, Wales, by her six brothers and sisters-in-law; William (Edith, Jessie), Clifford (Grace) Stanley (Margaret), Wesley (Edna), Lloyd, Harold (Merna), three sisters and brothers-in-law; Marjorie (age 14), Hazel Rose (Harry), and Elsie Gunby (Orley). Survived by one brother-in-law; Douglas Leask (Margaret) of Waterloo. Loving aunt, great aunt, and great-great aunt to over sixty nieces and nephews. Loving step mother to three step-daughters and their husbands; Cheryl McArthur (Murray) of Millgrove, Beverley Honchar (Gary Porter) of Midhurst, and Kimberly Abraham (Gary) of Campbellville. Dear grandmother of nine step-grandchildren, sixteen step great-grandchildren, and two step great-great grandchildren.
Irene was a member of St. James United Church in Waterdown where she served on the Board of Trustees for many years and sang in the choir for sixty-four years, singing many duets with her sister Elsie. She also sang in many musicals and competed in singing competitions in the Hamilton Normal School. Irene sang at the age of seven on the Eaton’s Good Deed Radio Club that aired every Saturday morning on CKOC. She also played several roles in the St. James young people’s plays.
In 1986, she retired from the Royal Bank in Waterdown after serving for thirty years. After retiring she joined the Waterdown Seniors Club and became quite active. She served as their treasurer for nine years and their president for four years. She also loved working in her flower garden and playing cards. Irene loved her sports, especially the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs. She loved going to the hockey games at Maple Leaf Gardens with her friend Lorna. She also enjoyed going to ball games and hockey games when the grandchildren and step grandchildren were playing. Irene loved doing Meals on Wheels with John for the Red Cross. Once a year she always looked forward to spending the weekends at the cottage in Tea Lake with the Binkley family.
Visitation will be held at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown on Monday, October 23, 2017 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at St. James United Church, 306 Parkside Drive, Waterdown on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. Rene’s wishes would be for donations to go to St. James United Church or Knox Presbyterian Church, Waterdown.
