Richard Stewart Joyes passed away peacefully on Thursday morning August 21st at Hospice in Peterborough surrounded by love. One of the nurses (Les) was with Lisa at the moment Rick passed and it meant the world to be with her and be comforted. All the nurses and PSW’s and staff were amazing. We would also like to thank Dr. Morelli and all the staff in the oncology department at PRHC for all their help over the last 4 years.
Rick was predeceased by his parents Stewart Arthur Joyes and Mabel “Eleanor” Kingdon. Rick was the father of Shelley Joyes and Chad Joyes. Brother of Nancy English (Howard predeceased) and Patricia Stephens (Russ). Uncle of Chris, Jennifer, D’Arcy and Kirk.
In 2009 Rick and Lisa (Huebner) started dating and had 16 wonderful years together. Rick enjoyed going on “road trips” and they would head out to Bobcaygeon or down to Kitchener wherever they decided that day. They made a few trips down east to PEI and Nova Scotia as well as a few trips to Quebec.
Rick joined Activity Haven 4 years ago and started wood carving. He met some wonderful people including Jack, Kieran and Bob. They all had e-bikes and road all spring summer and fall from Peterborough to Lakefield, Omemee and beyond. Many Saturdays they got together for breakfast.
Jack and Kieran were with Lisa everyday at Hospice bringing coffee, donuts, muffins and an egg Mcmuffin to ensure Lisa would eat something! Their support meant the world to Lisa and Rick.
Rick was affectionally known as “Poppa Rick” to Lisa’s children Matt (Mai), Erin (Brock) and Emily (Derek). And her grandchildren Owen, Avery, Nora, Lana, Johan and Milo. Rick built dollhouses for Avery and Nora as well as tables and chairs and many other items.
Rick was a good friend to Lisa’s siblings Lori, Kelly (Libby), Alanna (Myles) and Danny (Angelica). We had lots of visits over the years and made it to Quebec to see Dan and Angelica in June and meet their beautiful new daughter Luna.
Rick left high school early to get out into the working world and start earning money. Rick worked at Outboard Marine, GE and a short time in Hamilton.
Then Rick discovered that his talent was templating and building countertops and installing kitchens. This career lasted over 40 years. When driving around Peterborough and area Rick would often remark “I installed the kitchen in that house or I installed the bathroom cupboards in that house or I built the bar for that restaurant”.
Rick and Lisa moved into a condo in 2019. Rick helped many residents with small projects. He also spent many hours replacing the wood for the raised flower beds in the courtyard. It was a group effort. Rick and a couple men cut the wood and installed it. A few women stained the wood. It turned out beautifully. So many people at the condo have shown their support for Rick with visits and lending a helping hand when he was so weak at the end.
Rick has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later day to be announced.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Hospice Peterborough or The Canadian Cancer Society.
