Obituary of Orville Huey Harris
Orville Huey Harris, a resident of Wallaceburg, graduated into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 12:25 pm surrounded by the love of his family in Wallaceburg. Orville had achieved the age of 98, with 9 months to go to 99, but his heart was set on 100 years of age. Born in Sombra Township, the son of the late John (1968) and Sarah (Hiller) (1978) Harris. Beloved husband to his first wife Ada (Fox) (1998) (one month short of their 50th wedding anniversary milestone). Father of son, his pride and joy the late Patrick (2017).
Much loved husband of Kay Harris. Greatly loved and respected dad of Christine Marshall (Mark Colwell) and Jonathan Marshall (Cherish). Proud papa to Aiden, Alicia, David, Daniel and Benjamen. Dear brother of Maurice “Keith” and sisters-in-law Mary and Lorna “Dianne”. Also survived by special friend Ruby.
Predeceased by brothers, sisters and in laws: William “Bill” (1994) and Teresa (1969), Eileen Weaver (2014) and Stewart (2002), John “Leslie” (1997) and Anne (2010), Albert “Ross” (1998) and Mary Eleanor (1967), Louise Blake (2014) and George (1969), Lyle (2003), June (2021), Justin Melbourne “Glen” (2018).
Orville worked at many jobs initially. Early years at age 16, when WW II was on, a man came visiting the local farms looking for boys age 14 years or older, who could do a mans job in the town of Wallaceburg, to keep the factories running. At age 17 Orville went to Windsor to enlist but was told to wait a year to enlist, but by then the war was over.
His working skills included carpentry, electrical, welding and he was so pleased to achieve his Stationary Engineer 3rd Class papers (wouldn’t test for 2nd Class as that work was all dayshift which would have interferred with his beloved Bees!) On the farm the boys were pulled out of school in spring and fall, to work the farm. As a result he did not graduate Gr. 8.
Orville’s longest record of employment was at the Wallaceburg Glass Factory for over 30 years in the boiler room or powerhouse retiring in 1992. Then his love for bees took over!
In 1956 Orville’s hobby with beekeeping began with working out of the trunk of his car with 2 hives. His last year of production was 2019 with 63 years under his belt. This mini career kept Orville active, taking some hives to farm fields to pollinate cucumbers and other crops, throwing 100 lb boxes of honey shoulder high, as he harvested honey. At one point he worked 140 hives with 17 yards at farm fields in Sombra township. When the day came, he could no longer see the queen or stand without a cane or chair handy, he knew it was time to reitre from his hobby.
His earthly journey will be completed with a Celebration of a Life Well Lived on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at the First Baptist Church Wallaceburg, 99 Thomas Ave., Wallaceburg (off Napier St.). Visitarion from 10:30 am until the time of the funeral service at 12:30 pm. Interment in Riverview Cemetery, Wallaceburg.
