Peacefully, on Monday, January 27th, 2025, just three days away from his 88th birthday, at home surrounded by his family, Nicolas Ioannides, with gentle grace, took his final breath peacefully.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Amalia, and his children, Catherine Fragakos (Angelo) and Joanna Ioannides. He is survived and loved by his siblings, Parthena Grigoriadou (late Polychronis) of Drama, Kosta Ioannides (Mary) of Peiraias, Eleni Apostolidou (late Apostoli) of Bietigheim, Soula Vlassi (Thanasi) of Axioupouli, and Stella Tsipis (Basilli) of Peiraias. He will be deeply missed by many nieces and nephews, who cherished their Theo. Though much of his family lived far away, his love for them knew no distance, and he was incredibly proud of each of their accomplishments. He was predeceased by his parents, the late Themistocles & Katerina Ioannides.
Born in northern Greece in Kallyfitos, just outside Drama. He travelled and explored many destinations in his early years in search of a better life to raise a family. He spent time in Australia and Germany and then settled in London, Ontario, in 1965.
Over the years, Nicolas was involved in the Greek Community. In 1967, he was one of the founding members of the Olympians & ApolloFC soccer teams. He was also very involved in the Greek library when it was established. Nicolas was a motivated & lifelong learner with a passion for reading, fluent in several languages, and an enduring curiosity about the world. He found great joy in discussing politics & global events with his family and friends. He also found great joy in tending his garden, filled with colourful dahlias and sharing his harvest with others. He had a deep love for the arts, enjoying singing to the classics, dancing the ballroom dances, listening to music, and watching old movies. A poet at heart, his words reflected a deep love for his homeland:
“Ας ήμουν στου χωριού μου μια πλαγιά να ξαναδώ το Λεφκοβουνι χιονισμένο και το Παγγαιο απέναντι μου να γελά στο σπίτι μου το πατρικό τ’αγαπημενο.” Translated as: “Let me be in my village on a hillside to see the Lefkovouni (White Mountain) covered in snow again and the Pangeo (mountains on the outskirts of Dramas & Kavala) across from me, to laugh by my father’s beloved home.”
May you rest peacefully, my beloved Dad. Watch over your beloved village and the rest of us. You will be missed greatly and loved forever. May your memory be eternal.
The family would like to thank the entire Palliative care team, including the Dr’s, Nurses, PSW’s and VON service for their compassion, care and support during this difficult time.
A funeral service will be conducted at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Community Church, 131 Southdale Road West, London, on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. followed by interment at Woodland Cemetery, 493 Springbank Drive, London.
