On August 6, 2025, peacefully and surrounded by family, Marnie left us. She was the loving wife and partner of the late William (Bill) Adams (2022), with whom she shared 60 remarkable years of marriage. Marnie was the proud and devoted mother of Wendy (Dave) of Markham, ON, and Kristy (Brent) of Richmond Hill, ON, and the cherished “Grandma Grits” of Cameron, Aiden, Carter, and Griffin. Born to Ronald and Truth Prescott, she was their only daughter. She will be deeply missed by her brothers Tom (Shirley) Prescott of Wolfville, NS, and Mike (Fiona) Prescott of Kemptville, ON, and remembered with love by her extended family: John and Kathleen Hamilton of Oakville, ON, as well as her nephews Chris, Tim, Jonathan, Sandy, Scott, James, and Matthew. She was predeceased by her brother, Fairn Prescott. Fittingly for someone with such a vibrant spirit and social nature, Marnie’s entrance into the world was an adventure; her parents rushed to the hospital in Sioux Lookout, ON, by dogsled, and she arrived on New Year’s Eve 1938. With her father’s forestry work, the family lived in several communities, including Gatineau, PQ, where, in 1949, they built the much-loved family cottage at McGregor Lake.
She delighted in telling the story of how the elementary school principal once pulled her out of class to practise running so she could be the school’s track and field superstar.
Both a proud Upper Canadian and Maritimer, Marnie’s schooling took her from Ontario Ladies’ College in Whitby to the University of Western Ontario, and finally to Acadia University, where she earned a B.A. in Psychology. Known for her ukulele playing, involvement in debating and student clubs, and quick wit, she carried her love of learning into her teaching career. After Teachers College, she began teaching high school in Paris, ON, and continued throughout her life, remembered by many as a teacher of Geography, English, and Family Studies – or as a swimming instructor in earlier years. She met Bill in Temiscaming, PQ, and as she liked to tell it, “he was the first ant that could move the rubber tree plant! Because he had high hopes!” She was his Queenie. They married on August 11, 1962, and welcomed Wendy in 1965. A move to Hawkesbury, ON, brought a close-knit circle of friends and an active social life, followed by the arrival of Kristy in 1967. They later lived in La Tuque, PQ, and for nearly 40 years in Blackburn Hamlet, ON, where they were deeply involved in their community and at Rothwell United Church before moving to Richmond Hill.
Marnie’s interests were wide-ranging and her creative energy boundless. She was an accomplished cook, famous for her signature dishes…though she might keep one ingredient to herself! She was so pleased when her church bazaar baking was sold before it even opened! She was a talented artist beginning with acrylic paintings and progressing to her many beautiful tole painting pieces. Name it, she was making it – knitting, crocheting, sewing, macrame, crewel, ceramics, quilting, chocolate moulds, and floral arranging, especially with her front cart, to name only a few. She embraced seasonal pastimes such as curling, skating on the Rideau Canal, cross-country skiing, tennis, and swimming and boating at the lake. She was a member of the UCW, the Red Hat Society, chair of Bill’s church’s Youth Group, and also loved volunteering at the
Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard. She read all of the latest bestsellers, did her “puzzles”, watched sports with Bill, and especially enjoyed the laughter and camaraderie of the “Blackburn Hamlet Bridge Ladies.” She loved music and attended her favourite live performances. Oh – and she could shop! The McGregor Lake cottage was Marnie and Bill’s haven – a place of gathering, laughter, and lasting memories with family and friends. They also travelled across Canada and the U.S., with Florida as their winter retreat.
Above all, Marnie was devoted to her family and community, and her generosity of spirit touched all who knew her. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Elginwood Long-Term Care Home for their outstanding care. Cremation has taken place, and a gathering to remember Marnie and celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, August 20, from 6:30 PM – 9 PM at the Cedar Brae Golf Club, 55 Mac Frost Way, Toronto. If you so wish, donations in Marnie’s name are being accepted at the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
