With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Aunty María Teresa Otazo Ruiz (Tía Tere) on February 4th, 2025, after a courageous battle. She left a legacy of unconditional love, generosity, and loyal friendship. In her last days, she was surrounded by those she loved profoundly. She left this world in her sleep, just as she had hoped.
María Teresa was predeceased by her loving parents, Warnes and Laura, and her sisters, Fanny and Laurita. She is survived by her older sister, Ruth and her younger sister, Marlene.
María Teresa was born in Bolivia and immigrated to Canada 40 years ago, where she made Montreal, the city she loved, her new home and forged lifelong friendships. Nonetheless, the distance never stopped her from showing immense care for her sisters, eight nieces and one nephew. Later on, she became a great-aunty/grandma to Lucia and Sarah here in Canada, and these two little girls became the apple of her eye.
Our aunty was an excellent cook and a foodie. She enjoyed fine dining, shopping, music, and caring for her beautiful plants, but her most significant quality was her care and concern for everyone she loved.
She is deeply missed beyond measure by her family, especially her closest, beloved sister and lifelong best friend, Marlene. Her love has left a deep print in the hearts of her nieces, Laura, Paula, Vanessa, and her nephew Andres, to whom she was like a second mother, and her great-nieces, Lucia and Sarita, to whom she was like a second grandma. Her absence will leave a space in the hearts of her dearest friends, who shared so many things in life with her.
A special thank you to Margaret’s Place Hospice, the nurses, volunteers, and Dr. Boyle, who were so loving and kind to our aunty. We couldn’t have gotten through the past few months without them.
The family will hold a private celebration of life on February 5th, and a burial will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please kindly consider a donation to Margaret’s Place Hospice
