Lorraine Edith King Obituary
Surrounded with the love of her family, Lorraine Edith King (nee Calder) passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025 at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, MB. Born in St. Jean, MB on June 15, 1941, Lorraine graced the lives of those around her with her deep desire to connect people and a tireless dedication to her family and community. With her faithful husband Bill, they have been a beacon of the generosity and light of a marriage that endures all things.
Lorraine’s spirit will be carried on by her loving husband, William (Bill) King, and her cherished children and grandchildren, Monica & Don Curtis, Joe, Ella, Caroline & Robert (Bob) Coates, Eric, Devin, and Brenda Calder & Darrel, Jenna. Married October 20,1962, she took immense pride in her role as a homemaker and community builder, creating a home where there were always cookies in the jar, food on the table, and a long list of extended family and community connections to be called.
Lorraine’s culinary skills were well-known, especially her baking (the cookies) and canning (jam, “green” pickles or beet relish), which she generously shared with family, neighborhoods, and, most joyously, her children’s friends and her beloved grandchildren. From picnics to the field and dinners for every occasion, to hosting visitors at the camper at Stephenfield, she and Bill created a welcoming space where stories were shared, music was made, and the simplicity of good company was always appreciated.
A proud graduate of Success Business College secretarial program, Lorraine combined her legendary handwriting and typing speed with a natural flair for organizing to better her community and maintain the family records. Her favourite thing truly was organizing, whether a family gathering or community supper, a service organization cookbook, or her extensive family history books. Her love for her family and community shone through in each meticulously planned event or item, along with her high standards and lists of lists. Her convening was evident through her active roles in the local Women’s Institute, 4-H club, fall suppers, and fundraising for causes such as the Morris palliative care program. Her presence as a visitor and volunteer in local care homes was a source of comfort to many. As a dedicated member of the Catholic Women’s League, Lorraine’s faith and commitment to service were inseparable.
With Bill, they drove many miles, on all conditions of county roads, to enable choir and music lessons and to attend and support every school, music and sporting event they could, cheering on their children and grandchildren, as well as the numerous extended and “adopted” family members they are so proud of.
Lorraine’s passion for people took her many places. Especially dear to her was her enduring friendship with her high school pen pal from Australia. They shared their lives first through air mail paper, then reels and cassettes, a visit to Perth, and now regular video chats.
Lorraine’s faith community was a cornerstone of her existence. Even as her health declined, she and Bill could be seen, in all sorts of weather, in the church pew at Mary Mother of the Church that was generously designed to fit her wheelchair.
Lorraine’s memory will be treasured, and her impact on the lives she touched will endure. We celebrate a life beautifully lived and a woman who loved deeply and is deeply loved.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated March 7, 2025, 11:00 am at Mary Mother of the Church (85 Kirkbridge Dr, Winnipeg, MB), lunch to follow. Interment will be at a future date at Greenwood Cemetery, Carman, MB.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations in memory of Lorraine King may be made to a charity of your choice.
