Obituary of Joseph Frederick (Fred) McLellan, New Waterford
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fred McLellan of New Waterford on January 25th 2025, at the age of 71. Fred passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer, with his family by his side.
Fred is survived by his wife of 53 years and the love of his life, Patricia, as well as his children, Paul (Kathleen) in Rothesay, NB; and Joleen (Ian) Ross in New Waterford.
He is also survived by his brother Jim; his four grandchildren, Brett, Ally, Sarah and Paige; and his sisters-in-law, Barbara Gouthro and Hughena MacLellan.
Fred was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth (Burt) McLellan; and his siblings, Danny, Kay (Ray) Cameron, Peggy (Gord) Gagne, Patricia (James) MacNeil, and Marlene (Don) Waechter; sister-in law, Elsie MacLellan.
Fred spent his career as a Red Seal Electrician working for Devco at the Central Shops in Glace Bay. Following his career with Devco, he started his own company, FML Electric, which he owned and operated until retirement.
Since Fred was young, he loved cars – driving them, washing them and working on them. One of his great accomplishments was rebuilding his 1964 Chevy Impala and showing it with much success across the Maritimes. Fred was also a proud supporter of the community. He was actively involved in Minor Baseball for several years and was a 25-year member of the Knights of Columbus.
Fred had a special relationship with his grandkids. He cherished his time with them and always showed up to support and celebrate their many successes. He also loved sports and especially enjoyed having his family gathered for Leafs games. Fred’s family, friends and neighbours always benefited from his generosity, electrical skills and general know how. Fred was happiest when helping others.
Arrangements are under the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
Fred has been cremated and there will be a Funeral Mass in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford on Wednesday, January 29 at 10:00 am with a reception to follow at the funeral home. Fr. Jim Oliver & Deacon Lorne MacNeil presiding. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
We would like to thank all of the healthcare workers who supported Fred over the years, especially during the past few weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
