Obituary of John F. (Frankie) McMaster, River Ryan
John Francis McMaster, known to all as “Frankie”, passed away on Friday, July 25th at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 69.
He was born May 23rd, 1956 to Junior and Vange McMaster in New Waterford, Nova Scotia. The eldest of six children, he always watched over his siblings. He would regularly attend the horse races with his dad and his brother, Kevin. He grew to love the sport, and some of his best times were spent around the horses with Kevin at Tartan Downs.
At age 18, he began working with DEVCO at the Coal Piers with his dad until their closing. He then began a career as a bus driver with the CBVRCE. He loved interacting with the children each day, and could often be found first thing in the morning meeting up with his fellow bus drivers for a chat. Frankie was known for his ability to tell a joke, and bring joy to those around him. When not at work, Frankie loved to spend time with his family, go for a drive on his Harley, and watch his Toronto Maple Leafs play.
He found his true love early in life when he met Karen (Wareham) and they were quickly inseparable. They later married and welcomed two children. As they grew up, Frankie always made sure that his kids wanted for nothing. He had the biggest heart that grew even more as he welcomed each of his three grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen; children, Nicole Gouthro (Gerard) and Trevor McMaster (Lindsey); grandchildren, Alyssa, Lucas and Mason. He is also survived by his mother, Vange; his siblings, Kevin (Shirley), Gerard (Crystal), Tommy (Denise), Ernie (Kim) and Colleen (Curtis); as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father, John “Junior” McMaster, and many other family members, in-laws and friends.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 1st from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m., all in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Father Godwin Obike officiating. A reception will take place at the funeral home immediately following. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at:www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
A special thank you to the incredible staff on Unit 3B of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their endless care and support during Frankie’s stay. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
