It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of John Junior Washington Huho, who departed this life on June 4, 2025, at the age of 24.
Born in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on May 25, 2001, John was the beloved child of his devoted parents. The youngest of five siblings, he was cherished by his three sisters, one brother, his nephew, and three nieces. His joyful spirit, bright smile, and kind heart left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
John’s academic journey was a testament to his brilliance and determination. He attended Aga Khan Primary School, Feza International School, and St. Constantine’s International School before completing his International Baccalaureate (IB) at UWC East Africa. At the time of his passing, he was pursuing a degree in International Business at Alexander College in Vancouver, Canada, and was nearing graduation.
During his time at UWC East Africa, John’s dedication to service and leadership shone through in everything he did. He volunteered with Simba Children’s Footprints Foundation in Moshi, Kilimanjaro, where he spent Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons teaching English and Mathematics to homeless and orphaned students —providing not only education but stability and hope. He also participated in the KCMC Injured Children Initiative at the public hospital in Kilimanjaro, comforting and supporting young patients on their path to recovery.
A gifted athlete and mentor, John served as a basketball coach for the Under-14 team at UWC East Africa. His love for the game and for mentoring younger students was evident in the time, energy, and encouragement he poured into the athletes.
John was a delegate at the East Africa Model United Nations (EAMUN) in Nairobi, Kenya, where he developed his skills in diplomacy and global issues. He also participated in the Together for Development Short Course in Mbabane, Eswatini (Swaziland), which brought together 60 young leaders from around the world to critically explore development issues, engage with local communities, and create impact-driven projects to implement in their home countries.
His passion for inclusive leadership continued as a facilitator for the Umoja UWC Short Course, held at his alma mater. The course empowered youth to explore complex identities and social justice issues while building tools to become changemakers in their communities. John stood out as a thoughtful, empathetic leader, always encouraging others to discover their own voice and purpose.
A devoted Christian and member of the KKKT Lutheran Church, John lived by faith. He often spoke of God’s greatness and grace, and his life was a living testimony to the virtues of kindness, humility, and generosity.
John loved music, basketball, and had an unwavering passion for service. Whether through his uplifting words, acts of compassion, or selfless volunteering, John gave freely and joyfully. He inspired others to serve, to learn, and to love without limits.
Though his time with us was far too short, John’s light continues to shine through the lives he touched and the love he so freely gave. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all those blessed to know him.
“The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
