John Lawrence “Larry” Avery passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, in his 77th year at Kings County Hospital, Montague, Prince Edward Island. Larry was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but became “an adopted Islander” in 1988. Predeceased by parents Paul Domine and Edith Elizabeth “Betty” Avery (Leahy) and loving brother to his only sister Marilyn Claire Avery of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Survived by the love of his life, wife Eleanor Marie Avery (nee Campbell). Caring stepfather to Jennifer Harkness (Chris), Julie McCloskey (Jody), Beth McCloskey Bruce (Curtis) and Brady McCloskey (Josh). A loving “Grampie” to Kayla Jade Elizabeth, Kacie Molly Marie, Claire Eleanora, Harrison Charles, Beau Lawrence James, Mason Brady, Isaac Bradley, Ian Alexander, Michael Alexander, John Liam, Alexandra “Alea” Nevaeh.
Larry enjoyed a diverse (some may say unbelievable) working career and was an avid outdoorsman. He cherished good friendships, nature in general, history, gardening and many, many hobbies throughout his lifetime. He left his time on earth with “no regrets whatsoever.” A gift plaque from his sister-in-law (Helen MacKenzie) sums up his life in these simple words: “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and proclaiming, “Wow, what a ride!!!”
As per Larry’s wishes, a private Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date in PEI: no formal visitation or service. Donations can be made to The Souris and Area Branch of the PEI Wildlife Federation (SAB) if desired.
