John “Junior” MacDonald Obituary
Jesus said: “I am the door, by me if any man enter in; he shall be saved”
It is with a mix of sadness and joy that we announce the passing of a much-loved father, grandfather and great grandfather; John “Junior” Duncan MacDonald. Junior went home to meet his Lord and Savior on January 23, 2025. He passed away in Baddeck, at the Alderwood Rest Home, surrounded by his family; including his daughters, grandchildren and great-grand daughter.
As the last surviving of his immediate family, Junior was predeceased by his brothers: Ewen, Kenneth, John-Hughie, Melvin and Donald-John; sisters: Margaret Morrison, Jessie MacIver, Effie Campbell; a sibling in infancy and both parents. He was also predeceased by his first love Ruth (Bartlett) and his second wife Agnes (Robertson).
Junior was born in Quarry, St. Ann’s on March 1, 1933 to parents John and Sarah MacDonald. Junior was born again through faith in the sacrifice of Christ in January 1953. In life, Junior loved people; regularly checking in with everyone and always wanting to know what was happening in their day. Meeting regularly for “Tims” with friends, particularly his good friend Lorne. He cared deeply for his family; 2 daughters, 5 grand-children, 2 great grand-children and many more “adopted” family members who called him “Grampie”. Known for his love of food, always having a peppermint in his pocket, and never being too busy to brighten someone’s day with one of his hugs or a laugh. Junior loved his Savior. He was a faithful member of the Christian assembly who gather at the Gospel Hall in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He enjoyed sharing the Gospel and telling others of the love of the Lord Jesus. In his later years he could often be seen sitting by the window, in his chair, with his Bible open in his lap.
Junior is survived by his daughters: Debbie (David) Williams and Beth (Paul) Ford; grand-children: Jennifer (Jason) Swan, Jonathan Ford; Michael, Stephen (Kelly Ivey) and Sarah Williams; his great grand-children: Olivia and Nathan Swan. Junior also leaves to mourn his brother-in-law Freddie (Connie) Bartlett and sisters-in-law Mary Lou MacDonald, Irene Bartlett and Yvonne Robertson and also a number of nieces and nephews. We would like to extend our thanks to Dr. Woodford and the caring staff of Alderwood Rest Home where he spent the last several years of his life.
Visitation for Junior will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 1:00 pm at the Sydney Gospel Hall, 255 Whitney Avenue, Sydney with burial to follow, where he will be laid to rest at the cemetery in Upper Leitches Creek.
While Junior has already passed to join his Savior, we await the day mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 4; “for the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord”.
“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: Great is thy faithfulness.”
