Macpherson, Ian – Age 89, of Truro. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Ian Macpherson announce his sudden passing on February 25th, 2025 Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, at the tender age of 89.
Ian was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the youngest child of George and Williamina (McClusky) Macpherson. He was the last remaining member of his immediate family.
Educated in Scotland, he was a good student, excelling in Mathematics.
He loved sports as a participant, excelling in soccer, gymnastics, and golf. As a senior in high school, he was a team member of the School Boys Soccer Team representing the City of Glasgow.
His introduction to golf was at the age of nine by his father. Up until last season, he could still be seen walking the course at the Truro Golf Club. He accumulated many golf trophies over the years including “The Gentleman Golfer” award from his golf club in Bathurst, NB. He was also a member of the Bible Hill Golden Age Bowling League.
The year 1959 was significant: Ian married his sweetheart, Joan, and started married life by moving to Canada where they enjoyed 65 beautiful years together.
They had many career-related moves over the years, having lived in three different provinces and six different cities.
The family’s move to the Maritimes was by invitation from the Irving Co. in Saint John, NB. Ian and an engineer were given the task of designing and building the prototype for what became Scot Trucks, located in Debert, NS.
He retired from Noranda in Bathurst, where he was Supervisor of the drafting department and responsible for bringing Computer Aided Drafting to the mine, before returning to Truro to enjoy retirement.
Always a church going family, Ian held many positions throughout his lifetime, from Senior Sunday School Teacher, to Clerk of Session, and everything in-between and he enjoyed his time as a Cub Leader. He also sang in many choirs.
A past President of Toastmasters, he helped sponsor a chapter in Cape Breton. He was also very active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Ian had been an active member of a musical theatre company and enjoyed major roles in “Sound of Music” and “The King and I”, alongside his wife. While living in Bathurst they also ran classes in Scottish Country Dancing for adults and children.
Travel was another favorite activity for Ian, which included driving from coast to coast across Canada, visiting approximately 47 states in the USA, and many trips to Europe and the Caribbean.
A man with a good, kind, and gentle soul, and a dry sense of humour, he never spoke a harsh word.
He has surely earned his rest.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Crawford (Lorraine) and Cameron; and his beautiful grandchildren, Anthony, Callie, Jacob, Connor and Afton. He is predeceased by his daughter, Laura Joanne.
Cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.
Funeral service will be held in St. James Presbyterian Church, Monday, March 24th, at 11 a.m. with reception to follow.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to St James Church or your charity of choice.
The family would like to thank the medical staff in the ICU department of the CEHHC for their kindness, caring and compassion.
