Herbert “Herbie” Dickson Obituary
In Loving Memory of Herbert “Herbie” Franklin Dickson
1939 – 2025
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Herbert “Herbie” Franklin Dickson of Miramichi, New Brunswick, husband of Florence (Fracker) Dickson, passed away at Percy’s Place, Miramichi, New Brunswick, on February 7, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born in Chatham, NB, on December 21, 1939, Herbert Franklin Dickson was the son of the late Harry and Ruby (MacNaughton) Dickson.
Herbert “Herbie” Dickson, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished member of the Miramichi community. A gifted athlete and a man of unwavering faith, Herbie touched countless lives through his sportsmanship, dedication, and kindness.
Known as “Riverboat” on the ice for his speed and grace, Herbie had an illustrious hockey career spanning over two decades (1957–1978). He played for teams such as the Chatham Ironmen, Powell River Regals, and Nelson Schooners, earning multiple championships along the way. His passion for the game extended beyond his playing years, as he dedicated himself to coaching both hockey and baseball, inspiring young athletes with his knowledge and leadership. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to sports, he was inducted into the Miramichi Sports Hall of Fame as an athlete in 2017.
Herbie’s athleticism was not confined to hockey; he also excelled in baseball and remained an active sportsman throughout his life as a member of the Miramichi Golf Club, Miramichi Curling Club, and the Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club. Even in his later years, his love for sports endured, and he found immense joy in cheering on his grandchildren at their games. Beyond his love for sports, Herbie had a deep passion for music. He found great joy in singing and playing the guitar, often filling family gatherings with music and laughter.
A devoted member of St. Michael’s Basilica, Herbie was known for his deep faith, integrity, and generosity. His kindness and sportsmanship extended beyond the rink and playing fields, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Herbie was a skilled Pipefitter by trade, dedicating much of his career to the Nelson Groundwood Mill. Beyond his trade, he was also a businessman and property owner, managing several buildings—a role that became a significant part of his life.
Words cannot express the depth of our loss. Herbie’s legacy will live on in the community he cherished, in the athletes he mentored, and in the family he loved so dearly. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
Herbie is survived by his wife, Florence; three sons: Derek Dickson (Carla), Billy Dickson (Krista), and Craig Dickson, all of Miramichi; three sisters: Phyllis Thompson of Nova Scotia, Karen Morang (Denis) of Miramichi, and Kathy Dickson (Carmella) of Shediac, New Brunswick; two brothers: Bobby (Wendy) of Kelowna, British Columbia, and Dale (Jan) of Oshawa, Ontario; five grandchildren: Ryan, Garret (Rhayne), Emily, Faith, and Nate; and one great-grandchild, Nesta.
