Write a Tribute
Glenys Mary McDonald, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025.
Born in Auckland, Glenys made Vancouver her home for most of her life. She is deeply missed by her son Malcolm, daughter-in-law Lesley, and grandchildren Emily and Aengus. She was predeceased by her husband and best friend of 52 years, Ken McDonald, in 2020.
Though she often described herself as shy, Glenys lived with quiet strength and an adventurous spirit. In her later years, she embraced travel with relish—floating in a hot-air balloon over the rock formations of Turkey, exploring ruins in Greece and Iran, riding camels through sand-storms in the deserts of Morocco, and navigating winding roads high in the Himalayas. She loved to explore the Rockies and Oregon coast, taking annual camping trips in the trusted family vans.
Music was one of Glenys’s deepest passions, a love she passed on to her son. She sang with various choirs throughout her life, most recently with Healy Willan at VCC and Summerchor, delighting in the challenge and camaraderie of choral singing. The grandchildren lovingly called the recordings playing in her home as “nana’s music”, forever sharing her love of the classics with them.
Ever artistic, Glenys was known for her watercolour; sending out hand-painted Christmas card to everyone on her list. She often captured the beauty of her travels and adventures through these watercolours, showcasing how we can take moments in time with us. Other creative pursuits extended throughout her life, including spinning, knitting, sewing, Scottish country dancing, stained-glass, crafting, and baking (her cookies were legendary). She often turned these pursuits into community: the weekly craft group, Kerrisdale Seniors Community Watercolor class, and several long-standing annual Christmas gatherings.
She was a little unsure of her entry into Grandmother-hood, but quickly earned full rights to “Nana” – providing love, comfort, and unwavering support to all her grandkid’s pursuits. The grandchildren fondly remember trips to the park near her home, meals prepared specifically to their liking, crafts and activities planned, showing support at band concerts and football games – they miss her tremendously.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no formal service; instead, Glenys will be remembered at a small family gathering. Friends who wish to honour her memory are encouraged to donate to or attend a concert b Early Music Vancouver, a cause close to her heart.
