In loving memory
Frances Cote
Hubbards NS. Born November 27, 1940, Frances passed away after a short battle with a respiratory illness on December 31, 2024, at Bridgewater hospital.
The Daughter of the late Howard James Burns and Ada Pearl Wambolt. She was predeceased by her son Phillip Delaney, and her siblings, Helen Kozie, Judy Burns, George Burns, Jonny Burns, and Clarence Burns. She is survived by her children James (“big Jimmy”) Delaney (Anilyn), Patricia Fraser, James (“little Jimmy”) Delaney (Mary), Daniel Cote (Amanda). Survived by siblings Gertrude Lindsay, Caroline McNair and Joanne Burns. Grandchildren, Jeff, Chrissy, Jason, Hailey, Nicole, Raymond and Lauren. Frances also had a special bond with her Niece Judy.
Frances was Born in Halifax and lived in the Spryfield area for the early part of her childhood. She was close with her sister Getrude, and they enjoyed skating, picking blue berries, going for walks in the woods and looking for treasure. They were also known to borrow a cooling pie from a windowsill occasionally. She also loved animals. She was later placed in foster care in Antigonish for a few years before returning to Halifax. Frances had a tough childhood, and that shadow followed her for much of her life. She had a few different careers. Working in Nursing, cooking and house cleaning. She was married twice and had children from each marriage.
Despite the turbulence of her youth, Frances began to find some happiness and community in her adopted home of Hubbards Nova Scotia. The past 20 years may have been some of her best. She became very social and community minded. Always concerned with the needs of others. Driving other seniors to vet appointments with their cats or taking them for groceries. Frances became a member of the Hubbards Area Lions club and was so proud of that. She was finally feeling included and someone who was depended on. Frances was very personable and would strike up a conversation with anyone, leading to a lot of new connections for her. Gardening was a favorite hobby for hers. She also loved baking bread, making pies and date squares. She was proud to share these goodies with her family and friends. It was how she showed love. Some of her favorite activities include, playing cards, bingo, listening to music, scratching tickets and complaining about the news. She also had a great sense of humor. But her biggest passion was her kitties. She loved them very much and had four that she cared for. Predeceased were Sassy and Bella. Survived by Storm and Mia. These were all feral cats that she befriended and brought indoors. She felt a kinship with them and did everything she could to protect and love them. Frances had a “spicy personality”. She had developed a strong sense of compassion over the years. Taking defense of people she cared for. If she was pushed, you would find out exactly what she thought. In the last year of her life, Frances reconnected with her dear sister Gertrude and niece Judy. They had been lost to each other for 30 years.
It was so nice to watch them interact and see how much they loved and cared for each other. Frances remained independent, right up to her passing. Even as she laid in her hospital bed, her thoughts were of concern for a friend who was struggling. At 04:55 December 31, 2024, Frances left this world. She lived a tough life but also found redemption. Frances is at peace now. She is loved and will be missed. There will be a celebration of life for Frances on January 18, 2024, at the Hubbards Area Lions Club from 1 – 3pm. Donations can be made to “My Grandfathers Cat”. This is a local non profit that matches cats left behind by deceased seniors with loving homes.
