Donald Nye
1938-2025
Following a brief illness, Donald Dean Nye of Perth-Andover, NB,
passed away peacefully at the Upper River Valley Hospital on Tuesday,
January 14, 2025.
Donald Dean Nye was born on May 28th 1938 in Gordonsville, NB. He was
the son of Hanford and Elizabeth Nye (Giggie). He was the youngest of
11 children. Eldon (Eveline), Madeline (Elbridge Burlock), Harold
(Dorothy), Jean (Ralph Clark), Fred (Barbara), Crystal (Danny Swim),
Florence (Charlie Davis), Elva (Stanley Shaw), Warren (Francis) and
Marjorie (Michael Orser).
Donald was the loving husband of 54 years of the late Flora (Inman);
father to Malcolm (Yvonne), Rayma (Jamie Price) and Jason (Chanda).
Grandfather to Rebekah, Tomi, Samuel, Benjamin, Jacob, Gracie,
Matthew, Elise and Andrew. He was survived by several nieces and
nephews.
After three years of living alone Donald was fortunate to marry a long
time friend Kay Hanson. Kay was the light of his life. Donald embraced
Kay’s children, John Hanson (Erica), Peter Hanson (Shaunda),
David Hanson (Cindy), and Ruth Francis; as well as her grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
Donald was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Flora; his
sisters, Crystal Swim, Madeline Burlock, and Jean Clark; his brothers,
Eldon, Harold, Warren, and Fred; and Kay’s son, Andrew Hanson.
Donald grew up on a farm and planned on farming as a career. During
the winters he would work in the woods in northern Maine. Then at age
27, he married Flora and moved to Montreal in 1965 so Flora could
continue her teaching career. While there, Donald worked at Proctor
and Gamble. Once they found out they were expecting their first child,
they moved to Perth-Andover in 1967. That’s when Donald started
his carpentry career. A job he loved; he was a true craftsman. He
taught several carpentry courses, built several churches, homes and
many other projects. In 1995, he was able to travel to Japan and build
a log home for Tobique Log Homes. As Donald reached a certain age, he
started a semi-retirement. With his extra time, he spent more time on
his passions: woodworking, fishing, fiddleheading and gardening. With
woodworking, Donald loved to make projects for family and friends. He
also grew a mighty garden and blessed many people with his jams,
jellies, pickles, garlic, and produce.
In 2013, 2014 and 2017, Donald was able to take a short term missions
trip to Hope House in Odessa, Ukraine. He was responsible for planting
their garden and to teach gardening to the teen girls who stayed
there, many of whom called him grandfather.
During COVID, Donald built a diorama of a log yard representing where
he spent his winters in northern Maine. The resulting diorama is now
on display at the Perth-Andover Public Library. This past fall, he
began another diorama of horses hauling a trailer of logs, but was
unable to finish it before his passing.
Donald always had a story or a joke for everyone he met no matter if
they were a long time friend or a new acquaintance, or anyone at
Tim’s…or anyone who would lend an ear.
Donald was a longtime member of the Perth-Andover Wesleyan Church, a
church he designed and built.
Resting at the Perth-Andover Wesleyan Church with visitation on
Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 12-2 pm and the funeral service to
follow at 2 pm. Pastor David Hartlen officiating. Interment will be in
the Kilburn Community Cemetery at a later date.
For those who wish, memorial donations to the Perth-Andover Wesleyan
Church would be appreciated by the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brunswick Funeral Home,
Perth-Andover, NB.
