Charles Victor Bryan
September 8, 1934 – September 24, 2025
After a long life devoted to family and community service, Charles Victor Bryan, of Amaranth Township, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, at Hospice Wellington on the morning of September 24, 2025, at the age of 91.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Gladys (née Potter); his brother, Ralph; and his loving wife, Anne (née Davis). He is survived by his devoted life partner—in love, on the shuffleboard court, and at the cribbage table—Shirley (née Jefferson), and by his brother Bill (Maureen).
Beloved father of Grant (Sandra), Gaye (Tom), and Bruce (Judie). Proud and loving Grandpa to Kevin (Kate), Kathy (Jay), Kristopher (Cassandra), Jamie (Katie), and Andrew. Much-loved Great-Grandpa of Claire, Cole, Kiera, Anne, Maddison, Ty, Joshua, Jillian, and Henry.
Charlie was born on September 8, 1934, and grew from the very heart of Dufferin County. His roots reached deep into many families: Bryan, Potter, Simpson, Davis, Black, Macpherson, Wolfe and Taylor. To the very end, Charlie remained a proud farmer—asking from his hospice bed whether the “boys” knew what the bean yield was yet.
He was a tireless servant of his community, serving for 35 years on Amaranth Township Council as Councillor, Deputy Reeve, and for 17 years as Reeve. During his terms as Reeve and Deputy Reeve, he was also a member of Dufferin County Council, chairing several committees including Community Services and the Roads Department. In 1977, he was proud to be elected Dufferin County Warden and was the first in County history to be elected Warden for a second term, serving again in 1983.
Charlie was also a world traveler. He enjoyed adventures to Alaska, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. He visited Scotland many times to enjoy the World Curling Championships and attended inaugural Shuffleboard events in England, Norway and Russia. After retiring from dairy farming, Charlie and Shirley spent 22 happy winters at Lazy Days in North Fort Myers, Florida.
He was an avid hockey player (Amaranth Rockets) and baseball player (Laurel Lambs) when younger and an accomplished curler, and shuffler in his later years. He was also a renowned card player and dancer, and a loyal fan of his Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs.
Charlie—Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa—was God’s gift to us all. A bright light in our lives, and a guiding spirit toward all that is good and true.
“Life is like a book, and Charlie is starting a new chapter.”
The battle is over. Rest now, brave warrior.
The family will receive their friends for visitation at In Memoriam Funeral Services Inc. (28 Main St N, Grand Valley) on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 2:00 pm-6:00 p.m. A private funeral service is to take place in the near future.
